IELTS Writing Task 2 question

More and more people nowadays visit well-known places to take photographs of themselves, without looking at the place.

Why do you think this is happening?

Is it a positive or a negative trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Renowned places are visited by numerous people just to take photographs rather than enjoy the sights. I believe FOMO (fear of missing out) culture and an urge to keep posting on social media compel people to do this. This trend has negative consequences, especially for young people, as they become addicted to the immense use of digital gadgets.

Considering the responsible factors of this trend, the primary one is FOMO culture because most young people use social media platforms, such as Facebook and Instagram, where they see other people who share photos and videos of visiting certain sites. Owing to this, they do not want to lag behind, which prompts them to visit such places to post content online; consequently, they visit there to click pictures, not to actually enjoy the places. Moreover, every like and comment on their posts works as a reward for social media users that releases dopamine, and they feel accomplished and click as many photos to post again and again.

This trend has negative impacts on society; visiting well-known places means learning something new or enjoying quality time with friends or family members, and when people focus only on clicking pictures, it does not allow people to enjoy quality time with their loved ones. Thus, this ignoring attitude can weaken their relationship bond. Apart from this, the trend of recording every moment rather than celebrating makes people addicted towards social media, and they feel restless when they are disconnected for some time, for instance when they cannot access a reliable internet connection.

In conclusion, recording more than admiring well-known places ruins the experience of going out. People might think uploading this on social media can make them feel fulfilled, but this is not reality.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all parts of the prompt, providing clear reasons for the trend (FOMO and social media validation) and a distinct position regarding its negative impact. Your ideas are relevant and logically extended, particularly the explanation of the dopamine reward cycle. To reach a higher band, ensure that your examples are slightly more specific; while you mention Facebook and Instagram, providing a more concrete scenario or a broader societal observation would strengthen the development. Your position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarizes your main points without introducing new information.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover,' 'Consequently,' and 'Apart from this' to link your arguments effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate, separating the causes from the consequences. To improve, try to vary your cohesive devices further to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. For instance, instead of relying on 'Moreover' or 'Thus,' you could use more sophisticated transitions like 'This phenomenon is further exacerbated by...' or 'In light of these factors...'. Overall, the flow of information is smooth and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas with precision. Phrases like 'dopamine,' 'reward cycle,' and 'relationship bond' are used effectively. There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'immense use of digital gadgets' (better as 'excessive use') and 'responsible factors' (better as 'underlying factors'). You attempt to use less common vocabulary, which is good, but ensure these terms are used in their most natural context. Expanding your range of collocations and idiomatic expressions will help you move toward a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. Your control over grammar is generally good, and your meaning is always clear. There are occasional errors, such as 'addicted towards' (should be 'addicted to') and 'the responsible factors' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). You also have some minor punctuation slips. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of complex structures, such as conditional sentences or passive constructions, with greater precision. Most of your sentences are error-free, which demonstrates a solid command of English grammar.
