Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is often argued that governments should allocate more funding to environmental protection, whereas others believe that improving healthcare services is their primary responsibility. While protecting the environment ensures a sustainable future and preserves wildlife, improving healthcare enhances people's quality of life and increases life expectancy.

On the one hand, investing in environmental protection is vital for ensuring a sustainable future. Environmental issues such as climate change, air pollution and global warming rise serious threats to mankind and ecosystem. By funding renewable energy projects, forest conservation, and waste management systems, governments can reduce pollution and preserve natural resources for future generations. For example, Japan is known for their investment in solar and wind energy have successfully lowered carbon emissions and improved air quality. Therefore, these measures contribute to better public health and a healthier planet.

On the other hand, advocates of healthcare funding argues that it deserves the highest priority because it has an immediate impact on livelihood. A proper investment in healthcare sector ensures hospitals to provide high-quality medical care, modern technology, and sufficient healthcare professionals. This is significant important during public health emergencies such as pandemics, when hospitals often experience overwhelming pressure. Furthermore, investing in preventive healthcare, including vaccination programmes and routine medical check-ups, helps lower the risk of serious illnesses and extends life expectancy. As a result, citizens are able to lead healthier and more productive lives.

In conclusion, while protecting the environment is essential for the well-being of future generations, I believe that healthcare forms the backbone of society. Therefore, governments should give it the highest priority because of its immediate and life-saving impact on people's lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response is completely off-topic. The prompt asks about people visiting well-known places to take photographs without looking at the place, but the essay discusses government spending on environmental protection versus healthcare. Because the response fails to address the task prompt entirely, it cannot be assessed for task achievement in relation to the specific question asked. While the essay is structured as an argument, it is a memorized or irrelevant response to the actual task provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is well-structured with clear paragraphing and logical progression. It uses cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' effectively to guide the reader through the argument. Each paragraph has a clear topic sentence, and the flow of ideas is logical and easy to follow, even though the content is unrelated to the prompt.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

The vocabulary is generally appropriate and demonstrates a good range. Phrases like 'sustainable future', 'carbon emissions', 'preventive healthcare', and 'public health emergencies' show a level of sophistication. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication, and the language is used with a reasonable degree of precision throughout the text.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'rise serious threats' (should be 'pose') and 'advocates... argues' (subject-verb agreement error), as well as 'This is significant important' (should be 'significantly'). However, these errors are infrequent and do not hinder the reader's understanding of the text. The control of complex structures is generally good.
