IELTS Writing Task 2 question

More and more people nowadays visit well-known places to take photographs of themselves, without looking at the place.

Why do you think this is happening?

Is it a positive or a negative trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent times, an increasing number of individuals visit popular places to capture themselves on camera without viewing the environment. I believe this is a negative trend why this is occuring.

There is no doubt that taking photographs without looking at the place can lead to being sued for trespassing by the property owner. Some restaurants and fast-food outlets have a "no picture policy" in place so that if there is a negative review on their meals and drinks, they won't be evidence to allocate it to their organisation. For example, I visited a hotel in Abuja and was not allowed to take pictures but I was not informed. Unfortunately, I was caught and asked to pay the sum of 70,000naira by the Court of Justice, Abuja.

I believe that this is a negative trend because it could lead to being assaulted and abducted especially in a secluded place. For instance, my sister was assaulted and asked to leave the Orange cinema because she was capturing a scene of the movie that is still ongoing. In addition, there has been ongoing theft of phones and gadget at gunpoint. Also, young adults are skilled at using the internet and social media especially for photos and videos which could lead to distractions at work or schools.

In Conclusion, the growing number of people that photograph themselves without background inspection is mainly due to lack of awareness. Overall, I consider this trend a negative trend because it encourages assaults, theft at gunpoints, lawsuit and abductions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, identifying reasons and stating a position. However, the development of ideas is somewhat illogical. The essay focuses heavily on legal consequences (lawsuits, trespassing) and physical danger (assault, abduction), which are extreme and not directly related to the core issue of people taking photos without looking at the environment. The prompt asks why people do this (e.g., social media validation, FOMO) and whether it is positive or negative. By focusing on criminal activity rather than the psychological or social aspects of the trend, the response fails to fully explore the topic, leading to a limited and somewhat tangential development of ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is abrupt. While some cohesive devices are used (e.g., 'In addition', 'For instance', 'In conclusion'), they are sometimes used mechanically or to connect ideas that do not logically follow one another. For example, the link between taking photos and being sued for trespassing is a significant leap in logic. Paragraphing is present, but the internal structure of the paragraphs lacks a clear, cohesive flow of argument, making the overall message feel disjointed.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. There are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'allocate it to their organisation' and 'background inspection'. The student relies on basic vocabulary and occasionally uses words in a way that does not fit the context, such as 'capturing a scene of the movie'. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of sophisticated or varied vocabulary limits the score. The spelling is generally accurate, but the range of lexical items remains narrow.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow, such as 'there won't be evidence to allocate it' and 'theft of phones and gadget at gunpoint'. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. While the student attempts complex sentences, they are often marred by errors in subject-verb agreement or word order. The grammar is sufficient to convey the basic message, but the frequency of errors prevents a higher score.
