Student answer (Band 7.0)

In this technological era, people often travel to popular tourist destinations in order to click pictures of themselves without any prior checks or research about the how the places actually looks. In my opinion, this is overall a positive trend, despite of certain downsides to this behavior.

Social media influencers often create a hype through their accounts about certain places, resulting in a majority of people following in their footsteps and visiting those places without doing any background checks. Consequently, they end up disappointed if the place was not as they had expected. Moreover, they would have wasted their valuable time and money for the trip.

Subsequently, this trend would generate revenue for those destinations, in turn aiding the local authorities in infrastructure development. Furthermore, this would help create job opportunities for the regional community, alleviating their economic problems. Additionally, pictures of these destinations posted on social media platforms would get more traction and numerous other people would know about its cultural heritage, keeping alive the legacy of the place.

Apart from community development, by visiting places, people create memories by taking photographs. After they visit well-known places, people would discuss about their journey all their life, making them feel nostalgic everytime.

To sum up, people who avoid doing research about their vacation destination might see minor mishaps sometimes. However, in the forseeable future, this trend would most definitely lead to overall development of popular tourist places. Also adding joy to their own lives when looking back at the pictures.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for the trend and the evaluation of whether it is positive or negative. The position is clear from the introduction. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The explanation of why this happens is brief, and the argument regarding the 'positive' nature of the trend relies heavily on economic benefits, which feels slightly disconnected from the core issue of people failing to engage with the destination itself. While the ideas are relevant, they could be more thoroughly extended to reach a higher band. The conclusion effectively summarizes the stance, though the argument remains somewhat superficial.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear central focus. Cohesive devices such as 'consequently', 'moreover', 'furthermore', and 'to sum up' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is slightly abrupt. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some sentences feel a bit mechanical in their structure. Overall, the progression of ideas is coherent, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task, meeting the requirements for a Band 7 score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. There is an attempt to use some less common items such as 'alleviating', 'cultural heritage', and 'foreseeable future'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'click pictures' (usually 'take pictures') and 'discuss about' (the verb 'discuss' does not take a preposition). The range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, but it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'despite of' (should be 'despite' or 'in spite of'), 'how the places actually looks' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'everytime' (should be 'every time'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the reader's understanding of the main points. The control of punctuation is generally good, but the frequency of minor errors prevents the essay from reaching the higher bands where error-free sentences are the norm.
