Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, many people visit famous places to take photographs, even if they are unfamiliar with these destinations. I believe that visiting well-known places allows people to create precious memories and spend quality time with their family members. Therefore, I consider this a positive trend because it can contribute to economic growth and provide opportunities for social interaction.

One main reason is that a large number of people visit famous places in a country, which contributes to economic growth by generating revenue. For example, famous historical landmarks attract millions of tourists every year, generating income for local businesses such as hotels, restaurants and souvenir shops. Furthermore, when people upload photographs of these places on social media, they can encourage others to visit them, even if they were previously unfamiliar with these destination.

In my opinion, this development is positive because visiting famous places allows people to create precious memories and spend quality time with their family members. Moreover, tourism can contribute to economic growth by generating revenue for local businesses. Sharing photographs on social media can also encourage others to explore unfamiliar destinations and increase social interaction among people.

In conclusion, although visiting famous places may sometimes involve travelling to unfamiliar destinations, I believe this is a positive development. It allows people to create lasting memories with their loved ones and enjoy quality time together. Furthermore, tourism can support local businesses, generate revenue and encourage social interaction by inspiring more people to explore different places.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, identifying reasons for the trend and expressing a clear opinion. However, the analysis is somewhat repetitive, particularly regarding the economic benefits of tourism, which are mentioned in both the second and third paragraphs. Furthermore, the essay fails to address the specific nuance of the prompt: the act of taking photos 'without looking at the place.' The response focuses on tourism in general rather than the specific behavior of prioritizing photography over experiencing the location. Additionally, the essay is slightly under the word count, which impacts the depth of development.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, and there is a logical progression of ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore,' 'For example,' and 'In conclusion' are used to link sentences and paragraphs. However, the cohesion is somewhat mechanical, and the repetition of ideas between the second and third paragraphs makes the flow feel circular rather than progressive. The referencing is generally clear, but the overall structure would benefit from more varied transitions to better connect the reasons for the trend with the evaluation of whether it is positive or negative.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their ideas clearly. There is some use of topic-specific vocabulary such as 'historical landmarks,' 'economic growth,' and 'social interaction.' However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on repetitive phrasing (e.g., 'famous places' and 'generate revenue' are used multiple times). To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more precise synonyms and less common collocations to demonstrate a more flexible control of language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are grammatically accurate, and errors are rare and do not impede communication. For instance, the use of conditional structures and relative clauses is generally correct. However, the range of complex structures is somewhat limited, and the writing lacks the variety of sophisticated grammatical forms required for higher bands. Punctuation is generally accurate, but the overall sentence variety could be improved to enhance the flow and sophistication of the writing.
