IELTS Writing Task 2 question

More and more people nowadays visit well-known places to take photographs of themselves, without looking at the place.

Why do you think this is happening?

Is it a positive or a negative trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

There has been a gradual shift among people going to different and famous places and ending up taking photographs of themselves as souvenirs instead of enjoying the view and place. In my opinion, it is completely wrong and people should go back to visiting the places either without phone or holding the temp of just clicking photographs.

It is evident that is the era of social media, one of the reason being that people are often tempted to share their lives online and giving the satisfaction of temporary fun which is fun in the moment and gaining instant likes and shares from the other hand. Another reason is people often want to keep long term memory to the place and feel the best way is to click photographs of them with the place will help them take souvenirs physically with them.

I believe this is a completely negative trend these days as it looses the momentum of the new place and feeling of being in a different place and doesn't do any good.

In conclusion, it is important for one to enjoy and cherish to for the money one has spent and enjoy the new place in an wholesome experience.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 199 words. This significantly impacts the development of ideas. While you address both parts of the prompt—explaining the reasons for the trend and stating your opinion—the arguments are underdeveloped. For instance, the explanation regarding social media is brief and lacks specific examples or depth. To improve, you must expand your points with more detailed explanations and illustrative examples to fully explore the topic. Because the response is substantially under-length, the development of ideas is limited, preventing a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite limited and sometimes mechanical. For example, the transition 'In conclusion' is used, but the internal flow between sentences within paragraphs is often disjointed. The referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'from the other hand,' which is an incorrect collocation. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect your ideas more fluidly and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, central topic sentence that is logically supported.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for a higher band. There are several instances of awkward phrasing or incorrect word choices, such as 'holding the temp of just clicking photographs' and 'looses the momentum of the new place.' These errors occasionally impede the clarity of your message. To improve, you should aim to use more precise vocabulary related to the topic of tourism and digital behavior, and pay closer attention to collocations and word forms to ensure your writing sounds more natural and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally affect readability. Examples include 'one of the reason being' (should be 'reasons'), 'looses' (should be 'loses'), and 'cherish to for the money' (grammatically incoherent). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after periods. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct word forms, and proofreading for basic mechanical errors. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while ensuring they are error-free will help you achieve a higher band score.
