Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

No doubt, taking photographs has become a trend in today's generation. More and more individuals nowadays visit famous places to take photographs of themselves, without looking at the place. This is happening because of a social media trend. I believe this is destructive development, and I will give you reasons for this in the forthcoming paragraphs.

To commence with, the first and foremost reason is that they can't learn about the places they have visited. To demonstrate it, when individuals visit well-known places, they just focus on taking photographs so they can post them on social media to get likes and views. But due to this, they haven't learned about places' history and value. As a result, they can't take advantage of their exploration. Moreover, the other reason is that people spend a lot of their money for travelling. To explain it, if people do not visit famous places for taking photographs, they can invest their money on other things. Thus, individuals can save their money.

Furthermore, the predominant reason is that it can lead to crowded selfie spots and disturb other visitors. To explicate it, if masses just focus on taking pictures when they visit popular places, it can disturb other visitors who want to enjoy themselves peacefully. For instance, in Paris, some famous places authorities are not allowed to take photographs by individuals so that visitors will not face any kind of disturbance because of selfie lovers. Therefore, individuals can visit well-known places peacefully.

In conclusion, I believe this is a negative trend because it leads to disturbance for other visitors, and individuals cannot gain knowledge about the places that they have visited.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for the trend and the evaluation of whether it is positive or negative. The position is clear from the introduction. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding the financial aspect of travel is underdeveloped; the link between taking photos and saving money is not logically explained. The example provided about Paris is a bit vague and could have been more specific to better support the argument. To reach a higher band, ensure that every point made is fully explained with clear, logical reasoning rather than just stating the idea.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' are used to guide the reader through the text. However, some of the transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. The referencing within sentences is generally clear, though the flow between the second and third sentences in the second paragraph could be smoother. Overall, the progression of ideas is coherent and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'social media trend', 'exploration', and 'predominant'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler phrasing. Some collocations are slightly unnatural, such as 'famous places authorities are not allowed to take photographs'. To improve, the student should aim to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms and idiomatic expressions to demonstrate a wider range of lexical control and precision in word choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is consistently clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'some famous places authorities are not allowed to take photographs by individuals' and 'if people do not visit famous places for taking photographs'. These errors do not impede communication but occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The use of punctuation is generally correct, but the sentence variety could be improved by using more diverse subordinate clauses and varied sentence beginnings to enhance the overall flow and grammatical sophistication.
