More and more people nowadays visit well-known places to take photographs of themselves, without looking at the place.

Is it a positive or a negative trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Many people are going to new places to visit just to take a picture and not to enjoy. This is a serious concern for today's people. Exploring and admiring the natural beauty of the place you visit is a great way to enjoy your vacation. When you visit a new place, start enjoying that place, get to know about that place. When you start scanning a new place you will get a new ideas of knowing the world.

To commence with, many people are just trying to fit into society's trends. The trends are going and ruining people's lives. Last time, when I visited Paris, I saw a lot of people clicking pictures with their phone. They were not enjoying the beautiful scenery of Paris. Once they take the picture, they instantly upload it to social media just to show other people.

Furthermore, it's a negative trend. It will create a serious impact on upcoming generations. If you post everything about your daily life on social media, people might know about your life and it will hamper your personal privacy.

Ultimately, it is not bad to take a picture when you visit a well-known place cause you want to keep the memory with you, but you have to start exploring the place which helps to keep you peaceful and make the meomory in brain not in camera roll.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, identifying reasons for the trend and expressing a clear negative stance. However, the development of ideas is limited. The explanation for why this happens is somewhat superficial, focusing on 'society's trends' without deeper analysis. Furthermore, the response is under the 250-word minimum, which significantly impacts the depth of the argument. To improve, you should expand on your points with more detailed examples or logical reasoning. For instance, you could discuss the psychological aspect of 'social validation' or the impact of digital technology on human perception in greater detail to meet the length requirement and provide a more comprehensive answer.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite mechanical and repetitive. Phrases like 'To commence with', 'Furthermore', and 'Ultimately' are used, but the internal flow between sentences within paragraphs is often disjointed. For example, the transition from discussing social media to personal privacy is abrupt. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each sentence logically follows the previous one, creating a smoother progression of ideas throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for basic communication but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You rely on simple, repetitive phrasing such as 'enjoy', 'new place', and 'take a picture'. There is little evidence of less common lexical items or idiomatic expressions. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to the topic, such as 'digital documentation', 'aesthetic appreciation', or 'social validation'. Additionally, ensure you use collocations correctly; for example, 'get a new ideas' is grammatically incorrect and should be 'gain new perspectives'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'This is a serious concern for today's people' (awkward phrasing), 'get a new ideas of knowing the world' (article and pluralization error), and 'make the meomory in brain' (missing articles and spelling error). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence construction often feels repetitive. To improve, focus on mastering subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and varying your sentence structure by using subordinate clauses more effectively.
