More and more people nowadays visit well-known places to take photographs of themselves, without looking at the place.

Why do you think this is happening?

Is it a positive or a negative trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent year, an increasing number of tourist goes to a famous tourist attraction just to take photograph rather than appreciating the place and culture of the place. One of the reason is the influence of social media. In my view, this is a negatively trend because traveling to a different places just to take photos will makes you forget to enjoy the culture and surroundings the place has to offer.

One of the major reason for this trend is the growing influence of social media. People tends to get influence by what they saw on social media. Making them wanted to take photos of the places they saw on social media to receives likes, comments, and attention. As a result, visiting a beautiful land mark has become a content creation rather than appreciating the place that and culture. For example, visiting Paris and just take a picture of the famous Eifel Tower rather than to get the full experience of the city known as the City of love which is the culture of the people in the place.

This is a negative trend because it can make tourism less meaningful. Traveling is an opportunity to learn different culture, fun experience, and make unforgettable memories. However, if the visitors main opportunity is taking photographs they will miss the opportunity to appreciate the place. Furthermore, this will also cause disturbance to other tourist and will cause overcrowding. For instance, if one tourist group will take several photos at a tourist attraction, this will cause other tourist to wait for them to finished and will give them difficulty to enjoy the same view.

In conclusion, the influence of social media and desire of online recognition is the main reason why people focus on taking several photos than appreciating tourist destinations. Although taking photos will conserve memories, i believe prioritizing selfies over the full experience is a negatively trend.
