IELTS Writing Task 2 question

More and more people nowadays visit well-known places to take photographs of themselves, without looking at the place.

Why do you think this is happening?

Is it a positive or a negative trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Social media has now became an essential part of our lives. People love to capture themselves on their cameras along with the well-known places, just to post it to social media and have more views and likes. It's not just about social media, even the people who doesn't put their pictures out on any social platform still goes to famous places to click their photographs, without even noticing the place whether it's a historical or commercial building or a religious place. According to my point of view, it's completely a negative trend and I'll discuss the reasons in the forthcoming paragraphs with enough examples to support my viewpoint.

First of all, as I said the people nowadays have become addicted to the social interaction platforms like Instagram, snapchat or Facebook. They just love to post pictures on the sites just to get more views and likes in order to get popular. The people rarely cares about the place they are visiting to. For example, me and my husband went to an famous art gallery one day, there was a show going on about the history of nature, there we saw a TikTok couple who were clicking pictures outside the gallery claiming that they came there just to see an animated movie, they didn't even bother to look at the show they just clicked their pictures and went the other way. This shows that they just want to become famous and have nothing to do with the place.

Moreover, most of the people have just became the social animals like they just love to show-off through pictures to their relatives that they have visited a famous place that the other person have not visited yet. I remember that I have a friend of mine, who used to travel a lot to different places that are famous are some reasons. One day, she just showed me her picture, where she was standing outside the Taj Mahal (famous in India), when I asked her about the history of the place and what she saw there, her expression was all blank showing that she didn't have any idea. According to one survey, almost 77% people just like to click pictures of themselves outside of any well-known places, but when they were asked about the history or anything related to the place, they generally don't know anything.

The reason why I personally felt that it's a negative trend is that if people will keep concentrating on themselves rather than the places, the upcoming generations and even them are going to forget about the history and beauty of the place regardless what kind of place is that.

In conclusion, I would just like to state my concern that the people should know and admire the beauty and significance of any place they are visiting to, because only this way they can preserve the respective places and can also take a break from their social lives.

However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions between sentences feel slightly abrupt. Referencing is generally clear, though there are minor issues with pronoun usage (e.g., 'the other person have not visited yet'). Overall, the progression of ideas is coherent and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their opinions clearly. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, such as 'forthcoming', 'significance', and 'preserve'. However, there are several instances of awkward collocations and word choice errors, such as 'social interaction platforms' instead of 'social media platforms', 'click their photographs' instead of 'take photographs', and 'became the social animals'. While these errors do not impede communication, they limit the precision and sophistication of the writing, keeping it within the Band 6 range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'people who doesn't', 'people rarely cares', 'the other person have not visited') and tense consistency (e.g., 'has now became'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and phrasing issues throughout. While the writer attempts complex structures, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. The grammar is sufficient for communication but lacks the consistent control required for a Band 7.
