More and more people nowadays visit well-known places to take photographs of themselves, without looking at the place.

Why do you think this is happening?

Is it a positive or a negative trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It has been observed that these days an increasing number of people taking pictures while visiting famous places even without properly exploring these places in real time. There are several reasons for this happening and I believe it is certainly a negative trend.

The first and foremost reason for this occurrence is, the influence of social media. Nowadays, people share everything on social media platforms to get noticed. For example, celebrities visit famous places and take photographs and post them on Instagram and twitter to get attention from their fans. Their solely purpose is, to show how they are enjoying vacation instead of exploring and get likes and comments on their social media accounts form their fans. Another prime reason is, to capture memories. Some individuals visit well known locations just to conduct photography with their loved ones. They believe that we should capture every moments to collect memories.

However, this is definitely a negative trend from my perspective. I believe, the purpose of the visit of renowned places should be enjoying in real time. By this I mean, it is reasonable to take pictures to a certain extent, however, one should experience the beauty of the place.

For example, last month, I visited Niagara falls with my friends. Although we took photographs, but we enjoyed a lot. We did too many activities there, such as went on a ferry to get closer view of the fall, visited downtown, tried local cuisines and most importantly buy souvenir. All things were possible because our main priority was to enjoy the place instead of just taking pictures.

To conclude the aforementioned discussion, although some people conduct photography at famous destinations such as celebs and those who are photogenic, I personally believe, it is a negative trend. From my perspective, people should enjoy their visit, know more about the place and have fun to get relief from routine life.

There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'renowned places', 'real time', and 'photogenic'.
