Is it a positive or a negative trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is an undeniable truth that a considerable amount of people visit renowned places for taking photographs only instead of enjoying the place. There are several reasons behind this negative trend and the reasons of the same will be examined in the upcoming paragraphs.

To commence with, There are several reasons to take photographs only while visitng well-known places. The most obvious reason is influecing from others via socia media platforms. This is to say that if people visit any destinations, they are always thinking about their status and show off in front of others. This lead them to capture photos in camera without seeing any locations. As a result, even though, more money is spent on famous spot, they are not enjoying the vibes at that place.

Moreover, This negative trend leads to reduce the value of cultural and traditions. Without looking at the places, historical knowledge cannot be gained by individuals. This means that they never understand the core value of nation's past and history. For Instance, a significant number of people visit Taj mahal in Agra city, where they can only take photos in camera for nostalgic memories. Due to this, they never know about the history and story behind this historical monument. Hence, they should enjoy this spot in order to gain knowledge while visiting along with taking photographs.

To sum up, although there are some advantages to take photographs for memory, this negative trend influences people just to show off on social media. Tourist place should have some restrictions on photography.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the reasons for the trend and whether it is a positive or negative development. The writer presents a clear position that the trend is negative, driven by social media influence and the desire to show off. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the explanation of social media influence in the second paragraph states that people visit destinations 'thinking about their status and show off', which is a valid point but underdeveloped. Similarly, the example of the Taj Mahal is relevant, but the reasoning remains basic. Overall, the content aligns best with Band 6 because it addresses all parts of the task, though the ideas are somewhat under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is coherent overall and follows a logical paragraph structure, moving from an introduction to body paragraphs addressing reasons and evaluation, and ending with a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To commence with', 'Moreover', and 'To sum up', although some transitions feel a bit mechanical or overused. Paragraphing is adequate, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the prompt. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional awkward phrasing affects the flow slightly, such as 'the reasons of the same will be examined'. These features place the response firmly at Band 6, as there is a clear logical arrangement despite some mechanical cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms such as 'renowned places', 'historical monument', and 'nostalgic memories'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward collocations throughout the text. For example, the phrases 'influecing from others' instead of 'influenced by others', 'visitng well-known places' with a spelling error, and 'capture photos in camera' instead of 'take photographs' highlight limitations in word choice. While the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main ideas clearly, these errors and the reliance on simpler terms prevent the response from achieving a higher band. Therefore, a score of 6.0 is appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as conditional and concessive clauses (e.g., 'even though, more money is spent on famous spot, they are not enjoying the vibes'). However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several errors, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'This lead them' instead of 'This leads them', missing articles ('visit Taj mahal' instead of 'visit the Taj Mahal'), and incorrect prepositions ('visit well-known places for taking photographs only instead of'). Punctuation and capitalization errors also appear, such as capitalizing 'There' mid-sentence in the second paragraph. These errors occasionally cause slight strain for the reader, fitting the Band 5 descriptors where frequent errors persist.
