Is it a positive or a negative trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In the contemporary world, individuals tend to visit the areas which are often popular amongst the society members despite of focusing on the environment and condition of particular area. I firmly believe that it is a negative development as it has affected people's way of thinking and analyzing.

To begin with, due to advancement in modern technology, individuals often get influenced by the social media posts of several influencers who just focus on the positive aspects of the place rather than providing complete information. As a result of this, people visit a particular place only to click photographs and to post them on the social media platform in order to get popular. One evident example of this is often seen at various historical places wherein tourists visit just to create memories instead of learning the cultural values related with the place.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response suffers from a severe length penalty as it contains only 142 words, falling significantly short of the 250-word minimum requirement. Furthermore, the text is incomplete and breaks off abruptly in the second body paragraph. Although the writer manages to introduce the topic, state a clear position that the trend is negative, and offer some relevant reasons regarding social media influence and superficial tourism, the ideas remain severely under-developed due to the truncated nature of the response. In accordance with official band descriptors, failing to meet the word count minimum and leaving the task incomplete severely restricts the level of task achievement, capping the score at Band 4.0. To improve, the student must ensure they write at least 250 words and fully develop both body paragraphs with complete explanations and supporting examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

Looking at the structural elements present in the writing, the student successfully provides an introductory paragraph with a clear stance and initiates the body of the essay with standard cohesive markers such as "To begin with,". The overall arrangement shows a basic awareness of essay structure, and the sentence progression in the first paragraph is logical. However, because the text cuts off abruptly after "Furthermore,", there is no concluding paragraph and the second body paragraph is completely undeveloped. This lack of progression and incomplete layout prevent the writing from achieving a higher score. Cohesive devices are minimally present but cannot be judged fully due to the extreme brevity of the text. Based on the readable portion, a band score of 5.0 is appropriate as it shows some organisation but ultimately lacks overall progression and completeness.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student demonstrates a minimally adequate vocabulary range for discussing a general topic, employing acceptable lexical items such as "contemporary world", "advancement in modern technology", and "cultural values". However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward collocations that detract from the quality of the writing, such as saying "amongst the society members" instead of "in society" or "among people", and writing "despite of focusing" which confuses the prepositional structure. While the vocabulary used is sufficient to convey basic meaning, the limited quantity of text and the presence of these word choice errors mean the response sits comfortably within the Band 5.0 descriptor range. To enhance lexical resource, the student should focus on learning natural collocations and expanding their repertoire of less common academic phrases.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses such as "individuals tend to visit the areas which are often popular..." and "...people visit a particular place only to click photographs...". However, grammatical control is inconsistent. A prominent error occurs in the opening sentence with the phrase "despite of focusing", where the prepositional phrase is incorrectly fused. Punctuation and sentence formation are generally functional in the completed sections, but the abrupt termination of the text limits the grammatical evidence available. Because there are frequent errors and awkward constructions relative to the short volume of text produced, the response aligns best with Band 5.0. To progress, the student needs to eliminate basic structural errors and practise complex sentence patterns for higher accuracy.
