Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued by others that more and more people nowadays visit popular places to take photographs of themselves rather than looking at the places. This is mainly because of social media and the desire to share personal experience. I believe this is a negative trend because they miss the real value of travelling.

One main reason for this trend is that increase popularity of social media. People want to often share their beautiful photographs on platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook. They want to receive likes, comments and followers from their friends and others. For example, Many individual visit Eiffel tower and spend their too much time taking selfies instead of enjoying surroundings and learning about their history. Therefore, social media can influence people to take more photographs and upload them online.

Another reason is that some people want to gain attention from others. they would like to show that what and how they live their lives to their friends and other followers. For instance, some people take several photos and upload online immediately to show their livestyles. They also encourage other people to do same things. As a result, it can reduce important of visiting tourist attractions because many people miss the true value of visiting such places.

In my opinion, although photographs allow people to create memories and give them an opportunity to share their experience with their friends and family. In my perspective, people should explore their history, value their cultures and admire their attractions.

In conclusion, pictures of famous places offer valuable experience and happiness, while I believe that people should spend more time exploring new places and appreciating different architectures of tourist attractions.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by explaining why people photograph themselves at famous sites and clearly taking the stance that it is a negative trend. The position is maintained throughout the essay. The ideas are generally relevant, covering social media engagement and the desire for validation. However, some arguments lack full extension and suffer from slight repetition, particularly in the third paragraph where the desire for attention is discussed similarly to social media influence. Examples, such as visiting the Eiffel Tower, are provided to support the points, but they are somewhat generalized. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, fitting the criteria for Band 6.5 or a solid Band 6 in terms of idea development and task coverage.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay is coherent overall with a clear progression of ideas from causes to the negative evaluation. Paragraphing is utilised, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing different aspects, and a conclusion. However, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'Another reason is that' and 'For example'. Referencing is also occasionally imprecise, for instance, the pronoun 'their' in the fourth paragraph ('explore their history, value their cultures') lacks a clear antecedent. Despite these minor lapses in cohesion, the logical flow is maintained, allowing the reader to follow the writer's argument without major difficulty, aligning well with Band 6.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student displays an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'surroundings', 'architecture', and 'tourist attractions'. However, there are notable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'increase popularity' instead of 'increasing popularity', 'Many individual' instead of 'Many individuals', and 'reduce important' instead of 'reduce the importance'. Spelling and word-formation errors do not severely impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to a Band 6. With more precise word choices and careful editing of word forms, the lexical score would improve significantly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar with structures like 'It is often argued by others that...' and 'although photographs allow people to create memories...'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including missing articles ('visit Eiffel tower', 'learning about their history'), subject-verb agreement issues ('Many individual visit'), and sentence fragment errors, particularly in the fourth paragraph where an 'although' clause is punctuated as a full sentence. While these errors occasionally distract the reader, they do not completely obscure the meaning, placing the performance securely in the Band 5.5 to 6 range.
