Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt, exploring reasons for taking photos without looking at landmarks (such as social media influence and collecting memories) and evaluating whether this trend is positive or negative. The writer presents a clear position that the trend is negative due to safety risks and lack of cultural appreciation. However, the ideas are under-developed and lack extension. For instance, the example of the London Eye and London Bridge is muddled and fails to articulate clear, supported arguments. Additionally, sentence fragments like the opening statement ('An increasing number of tourists nowadays... without looking iconic landmark.') detract from the overall task completion. The response fits best into Band 5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay has some organisation, dividing the response into an introduction, body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion, but it lacks clear overall progression due to severe grammatical and syntactical issues. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs is often faulty and mechanical. Cohesive devices are misused or absent, and referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the logical flow of ideas. For example, transitions like 'Instead of this' and 'On the other hand' are applied awkwardly. The overall progression stalls because sentences often fail to connect logically. The coherence aligns with Band 4.5, so a band score of 5.0 is awarded.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical resource is limited and basic. The student attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'iconic landmark' and 'overcrowd place', but these attempts are marred by inaccurate word choice, incorrect forms ('self themself', 'history place'), and poor collocation. Frequent errors in word formation ('concert' instead of 'concern', 'loss' instead of 'lose') and spelling impede communication at times. The range is minimally adequate to convey the basic topic, but the frequent lexical inaccuracies restrict the score to Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
Grammatical control is weak throughout the essay, demonstrating a very limited range of structures. The text contains numerous sentence fragments, missing verbs, and severe grammatical errors that frequently cause difficulty for the reader. Examples include 'after introduced social sites it boost tourism', 'although they does not want', and 'every coins has two side'. Complex structures are attempted, but they are almost always faulty. Punctuation is also problematic, with periods placed incorrectly in the middle of dependent clauses. The frequency of structural errors places this firmly in Band 4.0.
