IELTS Writing Task 2 question

More and more people nowadays visit well-known places to take photographs of themselves, without looking at the place.

Why do you think this is happening?

Is it a positive or a negative trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

I strongly disagree people should check the place before visiting.

To begin, some people may depend on the beauty and attraction due to the photography, where some place leads to be risk. For instance, there could be slippery roads and risk of animal if its a forest area.

Secondly, some of the places have restriction with ages.Whereas, childrens will not allow to enter but adults will not realize about it this is due to they are eager to capture images inside. For example, in sri lanka there is beautiful view in the hillside and under age 5, there are not allowed to enter. Most of the parents don't think there will be a dangerous if the kid falls down.

Finally, most of them wants to promote themselves my creating videos in the social media. Moreover, they are looking to before popular by showing them through the photograph by saying there are ready for any kind of risk to take over. This is because some people depends on the video creating and they makes money using it. While some may agree that it is not important to see the place before visiting but they are not aware about any cons or pros of the place they visit. At least this will allow them to figure with places are less risky for photograph

In conclusion, it is better to find out the places before visiting and look if they have any photo restriction and aging.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response only partially addresses the prompt because the writer misinterprets the core premise of the task, arguing against checking a place before visiting rather than addressing why people take photographs of famous places without looking at them and whether this trend is positive or negative. The position is somewhat unclear due to this misunderstanding, and the ideas presented are limited and under-developed. Furthermore, the length requirement is not met, as the response falls short of the minimum two hundred and fifty-word limit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is some basic organisation with paragraph breaks used to separate different points, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used minimally or inaccurately, such as the abrupt transitions using 'To begin' and 'Secondly'. Referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the train of thought, particularly in the concluding paragraphs where arguments overlap confusingly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. There are noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and word formation, such as writing 'childrens' instead of children, 'before popular' instead of popular, and confusing terms like 'aging' instead of age restrictions. These errors cause some difficulty and strain for the reader throughout the text.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer demonstrates a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex structures that are faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors in verb forms, prepositions, and sentence construction, such as 'there could be slippery roads and risk of animal' and 'there are not allowed to enter'. These errors cause frequent difficulty for the reader in understanding the intended meaning.
