Student answer (Band 6.0)

I believe taking self-portraits has become a huge trend nowadays and a part of people's day-to-day life. A person becomes obsessed with clicking their own pictures whenever they visit any well-known or new places around them. I think this is definitely a negative trend since an individual does not know about the place, whether it is a Historical place or a place to visit just for fun.

To begin with, I would like to point out that visiting well-known places has been elevated in the mid-20s, where people enjoy leisure with their family and friends. They often visit such places which have History linked to them and sometimes they have an emotional attachment to the people visiting these places. I have seen numerous visitors who visit these places just for a Social media post or a new trend of creating TikTok clips which essentially not required.

For instance, I've been to a very well-known Church in Montreal, Canada, that has years of history linked to it. It was said that during World War II, Canadian soldiers were martyred at that same spot and in their remembrance, the state declared to build a Church to give them Tribute for their Bravery and loyalty towards the Nation. But people nowadays visit these places just to have fun and to get some snapshots for their social media posts, which shows disrespect to the soldiers who died for their country and people.

In conclusion, I am not against the trend of taking photographs of themselves at well-known places, but an individual has to sense whether capturing these places without knowing them is appropriate or first they should know about the place, research it and educate others why this place is important to visit and take photographs.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both the reasons behind the trend and expressing a clear position that it is a negative development. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. While the writer attempts to explain the causes—such as the desire for social media content or creating TikTok clips—the explanation of why people do this without looking at the place remains somewhat superficial. Furthermore, the argument regarding respect for historical sites and soldiers is introduced effectively in the example about the Canadian church, but the overall progression of ideas feels a bit generalized and could benefit from deeper analysis of the psychological drivers behind modern tourism and photography habits.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, moving from an introduction to causes, an illustrative example, and a concluding thought. The response demonstrates characteristics of the lower band by successfully utilizing basic paragraphing and clear organizational structure, while stepping into the higher band through clear logical sequencing and the use of transitional markers like 'To begin with', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion'. Nevertheless, cohesion is at times slightly mechanical or repetitive, and referencing can occasionally be improved, such as the pronoun link in 'which essentially not required', which prevents the cohesion from being entirely seamless.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the writer's meaning without causing communication breakdown. The student attempts less common vocabulary with varying degrees of success, using phrases like 'obsessed with clicking', 'emotional attachment', and 'martyred at that same spot'. However, there are noticeable limitations in lexical precision and word choice errors, such as saying 'elevated in the mid-20s' to mean a time period, or phrasing like 'which essentially not required' where a verb is missing. Spelling is generally acceptable, but collocation and word form issues keep the vocabulary within the competent range without achieving higher-level sophistication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over basic structures and attempting more intricate clauses, such as 'It was said that during World War II, Canadian soldiers were martyred...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing auxiliary verbs ('which essentially not required'), capitalization issues ('Historical place', 'Social media'), and occasional awkward preposition use or pre-modifier patterns. However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the train of thought easily, which fits comfortably within the expected standard.
