IELTS Writing Task 2 question

More and more people nowadays visit well-known places to take photographs of themselves, without looking at the place.

Why do you think this is happening?

Is it a positive or a negative trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is often observed that most people like to explore trending locations to take pictures of themselves and the place itself is ignored. According to me, this is a negative trend as the beauty of the location is not adored and these places are visited just to post some snaps on social media.

Firstly, as discussed in the first paragraph, social media is creating a peer pressure to every individual to visit various locations and post it online. People start comparing their lives with others just by looking at some images posted on these platforms. This creates a sense of missing out to those who do not travel very often. For instance, last year we went for an office trip to Montreal and I remember, one of our teammate was just focused on taking selfies rather than enjoying the vacation. Moreover, he was the only one who posted dozens of pictures on his online profile.

Apart from this, the beauty of that particular location is not encouraged as it was done earlier. People used to visit these places to gain some knowledge and learn the history behind that place but now there are very few individuals who are interested in these things. For example, the Taj Mahal has now become a tourist spot but very few people hire a guide who tells the history behind that monument.

To conclude, this negative trend can be fixed if these locations prohibit the use of cameras and provide a guide at a minimal cost so that people visit these loactions not only to spare their time but also to have a glimps of that particular place.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you consider the trend negative, and you address both why it happens and its effects. The explanation of social-media pressure is relevant and supported by the Montreal anecdote, while the Taj Mahal example illustrates the loss of interest in history. This gives the response a sound, task-focused foundation. However, the causes and consequences are not developed equally: the discussion mainly focuses on social media and gives less explanation of why people prioritise selfies over experiencing a place. The conclusion proposes camera restrictions and guides, but these solutions are not fully connected to the causes discussed. Develop the reasoning behind each main point and explain how your examples demonstrate the wider trend to make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, two focused body paragraphs and a conclusion. Sequencing phrases such as “Firstly,” “Apart from this” and “To conclude” help readers follow the progression, and each example is placed alongside the point it supports. Some linking is nevertheless mechanical: “as discussed in the first paragraph” refers back to the introduction rather than adding a natural connection, and “Moreover” introduces a detail that could be integrated more clearly with the anecdote. There is also a slight shift from explaining the trend to recommending solutions in the final sentence. Use more precise referencing and vary the way ideas are connected, while ensuring each paragraph develops one central point consistently.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “peer pressure,” “comparing their lives,” “social media” and “history behind that monument.” These choices make the main ideas clear, and the response attempts some less common expressions. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “a sense of missing out,” “the beauty of the location is not adored,” and “spare their time.” There are also spelling errors in “loactions” and “glimps.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim to learn vocabulary in common word partnerships—for example, how to describe appreciating a place or experiencing a fear of missing out—and proofread spelling before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “a guide who tells the history” and a conditional structure in the conclusion. Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “a peer pressure to every individual” has an article and preposition problem, while “one of our teammate was” has a plural agreement error. In “People used to visit these places … but now there are very few individuals,” the time contrast could be expressed with more consistent tense choices. The opening sentence also has an awkward structure around “to take pictures of themselves and the place itself is ignored.” Review articles, subject–verb agreement and sentence construction, then check that longer sentences remain grammatically controlled.
