Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Luis,
I hope all is well.
My name is Shivam, and I am one of the member of an international student club.
I am writing this letter to you in regards to the event the club is planning to organize to celebrate popular food of different nations, and ethnicity.
The main motive of drafting this letter to you is as an international student from India, I would like you to include and offer different types or variety of food to the attenders from my country.
Although, India has vast cultural and varieties of food, I would like you to include "Daal-Bati" as a dish. "Daal Bati" has everything which can represent India on international level. It has Indian spices, Indian taste, the cultural daal and more.
In addition, not many people here at event may have heard about "Daal Bati", but in India people eat it on regular basis. Furthermore, with taste and everything, it is also rich in protein, fiber, carbs, and basis aminos.
I hope my advise would be considered, and people would have "Daal Bati" as one of the national dish of India.
Your Faithfully,
Shivam Desai

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: offering a dish, describing it, and explaining its inclusion. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention the dish is rich in nutrients and represents Indian culture, the description remains quite general. To reach a higher band, you could provide more vivid sensory details about the dish or explain more specifically how it would enhance the cultural diversity of the event. Despite this, the purpose of the letter is clear and the response is fully on-topic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the introduction to the proposal and justification. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition' and 'Furthermore' to link your ideas. However, the paragraphing is insufficient; the entire body of the letter is essentially one large block of text. Breaking the letter into distinct paragraphs for the offer, the description, and the justification would significantly improve the structure. Additionally, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother to better guide the reader through your argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'international student', 'cultural', and 'nutrients' (implied by protein/fiber). There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'motive of drafting this letter' (purpose is more natural) and 'attenders' (attendees is the standard term). You also use 'basis aminos' which is not standard terminology. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band score. Expanding your range of descriptive adjectives would help.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. For example, 'one of the member' should be 'one of the members', and 'the event the club is planning to organize' is missing a preposition or relative pronoun for better flow. You also have issues with article usage ('on regular basis' should be 'on a regular basis') and minor punctuation errors. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will improve your accuracy.
