Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Luis,
I am writing to participate in the upcoming celebration of popular food event from all around the globe, by offering the introduction of a famous dish of India. By representing the food from India into this event, would enable other nations to know more about the rich, tasty and diverse food of India.
The dish is known as Pav-bhaji, it is loved by almost every Indian due to it's creamy texture gravy made of boiled smashed vegetables as well as it's combination with a soft Indian style bun made of wheat, makes it more healthier and tastier to consume. In addition, this dish is full of nutrition as it is prepared from all kinds of vegetables including potatoes, beetroot, carrot, peas, cauliflower, spinach and cabbage.
I think this dish would enhance the overall experience of the audience visiting this event as it would help them to learn new dish which is prepared within less time and with less efforts. Apart from that, this dish would give the glimpse of the traditional cooking strategies of India, reflecting India's diverse culture and traditions.
Thank you for considering my request. I hope you would give me an opportunity to showcase this Indian dish on a global level. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Sakshi Patel

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly offered to make a dish, provided a detailed description of Pav-bhaji, and explained its relevance to the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the description of the ingredients and the cultural significance of the dish. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning, and the response maintains a consistent focus throughout. You have met all the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Apart from that', and 'By representing' to link your sentences and paragraphs. While some transitions are slightly mechanical, the overall flow is smooth and the progression of ideas is logical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different points of your letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'diverse', 'creamy texture', 'glimpse', and 'showcase'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'offering the introduction of' (which is slightly unnatural) and 'makes it more healthier' (where 'more' is redundant). However, these errors do not impede communication. You show an ability to use descriptive language to explain the dish, which adds value to your response. Expanding your range of collocations would help you reach a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as the punctuation error in 'it's creamy texture' (should be 'its') and the sentence fragment 'by offering the introduction...'. Additionally, there is a minor subject-verb agreement issue in 'would enable other nations to know'. Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are clear and error-free. Your control over complex structures is generally good, and the errors do not cause any confusion for the reader.
