Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Grace,
I am writing concerning the fort-coming event to celebrate popular food from all over the world. I would like to be part of it.
I would like to make a popular dish from my country Nigeria. In my country, we have several well-known foods people would like to try because it is healthy.
The dish i would like to make is party jollof. I know a lot of people might have seen it online and will like to try it. It is mostly prepared for special occasions like weddings, Christmas or new year time, birthday parties. It is mostly shared or eaten with friends and families to celebrate love.
It should be included in the event because it is a very healthy food that should be eaten for it's benefits. It is paired with any protein of your choice and it is rice mostly cooked with fresh vegetables, tomatoes and some meats. The world needs to try it and i wish people will incorporate it in their menu. Looking forward to hearing from you concerning my request.
Thanks for your considerations.
Yours Sincerely,
Lynda.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: offering to make a dish, describing it, and explaining why it should be included. You successfully adopted the appropriate tone for a letter to an event organiser. However, there is a significant error in the opening: you addressed the letter to 'Grace' despite the instructions explicitly stating to write to 'Luis'. This is a failure to follow a specific instruction. Additionally, while the ideas are relevant, the explanation of why the dish should be included is slightly repetitive, focusing on health benefits without providing a more compelling cultural or culinary argument. To improve, ensure you follow all procedural instructions carefully and expand your supporting ideas with more variety.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'The dish I would like to make is...' and 'It should be included in the event because...'. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and the use of referencing could be more sophisticated. For instance, the transition between the description of the dish and the justification for its inclusion is functional but lacks variety. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider range of linking words and ensure your referencing is consistently precise.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'incorporate', 'occasions', and 'benefits'. There are some minor errors, such as 'fort-coming' (should be 'forthcoming') and 'it's' (should be 'its' as a possessive). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it remains somewhat basic and lacks the 'less common' lexical items that would elevate the response to a higher band. You rely on simple descriptors like 'healthy' and 'popular' multiple times. To improve, try to incorporate more descriptive adjectives and precise culinary terminology to make your writing more engaging and sophisticated.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'the world needs to try it and i wish people will incorporate it' (should be 'would incorporate') and 'it is rice mostly cooked' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are inconsistent capitalizations (e.g., 'i' instead of 'I'). The majority of your sentences are understandable, but the frequency of minor errors prevents the writing from being considered error-free. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent capitalization will help improve your accuracy significantly.
