Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Luis,
As a member of an International Student club, I am writing to request to consider food from my country for the next popular food celebration event.
The food which I am recommending for the upcoming event is Beshbarmak. The origin of this popular dish is from Kazakhstan. The main ingredients of this dish are flat noodles, onions, potatoes, soup and horse meat. That is one of the well known and the most popular dish in my country, and many of people like to eat it during any year holidays.
I highly encourage you to consider and review my request because it is important not just only for me but also for the other club members who are curious about my culture and want to know about my food preference.
Please let me know whether this event arrangement would be possible or if you require any ingredient recipes or any further information.
Thank you for considering my request. I look forward to your reply and final decision.
Your faithfully,
Temirlan

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

| Grammatical Range and Accuracy | 6.5 |
| Overall | 7.0 |
Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly offered to make a dish, provided a description of Beshbarmak, and explained its cultural significance. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. To reach a higher band, you could provide more vivid detail about the dish—for example, describing the texture of the noodles or the specific preparation method—to make your proposal more persuasive and engaging. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'The main ingredients of this dish are...' and 'I highly encourage you to...', which help link your sentences. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', or 'in addition') to connect your ideas more fluidly rather than relying on simple sentence structures.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'upcoming event', 'ingredients', and 'cultural preference'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'any year holidays' (which should be 'holidays throughout the year') and 'request to consider' (which is slightly redundant). While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise collocations or descriptive adjectives would elevate your writing. For instance, instead of 'popular dish', you could use 'traditional delicacy' or 'staple food'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'many of people' (should be 'many people') and 'not just only' (a redundant construction). Additionally, the closing 'Your faithfully' contains a minor error; it should be 'Yours faithfully'. Despite these slips, your meaning is always clear, and the errors do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and avoiding redundant phrasing to ensure your writing is more polished.
