Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Luis,

I hope you are doing very well. I am writing this letter to thank you for organizing such kind of event that show the cuisine from around the world and I want to present one of the best food from my country.

I am from India and there are numbers of foods that is loved by people from different nation however it is very difficult to choose one, so I decided to present the most delicious food and that is butter chicken and garlic Naan. Basically the butter chicken is made up of butter, tomatoes, chicken tender and the spices. that has creamy flavor, garlic Naan cooked in the wheat flour and lots of garlic that gives us tangy texture.

I believe this dish will be the best to discribe the Indian food culture and it will loved by people who comes to the event. I hope you will allow to consider my participation.

Yours sincerely,

Sunil Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: offering to make a dish, describing it, and explaining why it should be included. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention the ingredients of the butter chicken, the explanation of why it should be included is quite brief and could be expanded with more detail about its popularity or cultural significance to better engage the reader. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'however' and 'I believe', to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally slightly mechanical. For instance, the transition between describing the ingredients and the texture of the naan could be smoother. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as the use of 'that' to refer back to previous clauses. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring clear pronoun references would help elevate your score in this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'cuisine', 'creamy flavor', and 'tangy texture'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'numbers of foods' (should be 'a number of dishes') and 'the best food' (should be 'one of the best dishes'). You also rely on some basic descriptors. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise adjectives and idiomatic expressions related to food and cultural events.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('there are numbers of foods that is loved'), missing articles ('the cuisine'), and punctuation errors (e.g., starting a sentence with 'that has creamy flavor'). These errors are noticeable but do not significantly impede communication. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring that your complex sentences are punctuated correctly.
