Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Luis,
I hope you're doing well. I am writing this letter in regards to the "FOOD OVER THE GLOBE" event organized by the International Stundent's club. As you know many students from all over the world are going to present a special dish from their respective culture and country, I would also like to bring a popular dish from my cultrue called "Bhel".
This dish is like an evening snack for people in my country. The dish has puffed rice, veggies like onion, tomato, boiled chickpeas and some indian sauces. It is very light on stomach and healthy too. The ingredients can be selected by one's choice so other students with allergies can skip some ingredients and still enjoy this dish. The spice level can also be according to one's preference. In my opinion everyone will love this concept. Let me know what you think about presenting this at the event, or should I explore more options.
Looking forward to hear from you. Thanks for your time and consideration.
Regards,
Jiya Patel

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

| Lexical Resource | 7.0 |
| Grammatical Range and Accuracy | 7.0 |
| Overall | 7.5 |
Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly offered to make 'Bhel', described its ingredients and preparation, and provided a logical explanation for why it is a suitable addition to the event, specifically highlighting its versatility regarding dietary needs. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organizer. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the cultural significance of the dish to further develop your ideas, but overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Ideas flow smoothly from one to the next. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'As you know' and 'In my opinion' to connect your thoughts. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction from the main details. To improve, you could incorporate a wider variety of linking words or transition phrases to create a more sophisticated flow between sentences, as some transitions are currently quite simple.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'respective culture', 'preference', and 'consideration' correctly. There are a few minor spelling errors, such as 'Stundent's' and 'cultrue', which are likely slips. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it remains somewhat functional. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise or descriptive adjectives and collocations related to food and cultural events to show greater flexibility in your word choice.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'The ingredients can be selected by one's choice so other students with allergies can skip some ingredients'. While there are occasional grammatical slips, such as 'light on stomach' (should be 'light on the stomach') and 'Looking forward to hear' (should be 'Looking forward to hearing'), these errors do not impede communication. Your control over punctuation and sentence structure is generally good, and the meaning is always clear to the reader.
