Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I am writing this email to suggest some meal options that can be included in our event club. Most of the individuals like the concept.

Firstly, I belong to India, and specifically, I am a Gujarati girl, so in my culture, Indian foods are very famous, such as poha, khaman, and some snacks. These are the popular dishes in my country that we can add to this meal menu.

Moreover, I would suggest that this dish be definitely loved by the students. To add on to this, this recipe is very simple to make, and it is oil-free. Also, it is steamed in the oven, so we can eat easily; basically, this dish has so many flavors.

Lastly, I think we should add this delicious dish because half of the students in the event belong to India, and they are international students, so they love it.

I hope you like my suggestion, and I am waiting for your response.

Your sincerly,

Sweta.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You offered to make a dish, described it, and explained why it should be included. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, you mention 'poha' and 'khaman' but do not clearly describe the specific dish you intend to make, leaving the reader slightly confused about which one you are proposing. To improve, ensure you focus on one specific dish and provide more descriptive detail about its ingredients or preparation to fully satisfy the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised into paragraphs, and you use basic cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'Lastly' to guide the reader. However, the transition between ideas is sometimes mechanical, and the connection between sentences could be smoother. For example, the phrase 'To add on to this' is a bit informal and repetitive. The paragraphing is appropriate for a letter, and the overall progression of ideas is clear enough for the reader to follow your intent without difficulty.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message, such as 'culture', 'international', and 'delicious'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'event club' instead of 'student club' and 'eat easily'. Some phrasing is slightly unnatural, such as 'this dish be definitely loved'. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise adjectives and idiomatic expressions related to food and cultural events, and ensure your word choices are contextually accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'Your sincerly' (spelling error), 'Most of the individuals like' (awkward phrasing), and 'this dish be definitely loved' (incorrect verb form). There are also minor punctuation issues. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct verb tense usage will help improve your accuracy.
