Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Luis,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to express my desire to participate in the upcoming event of food festival.
In the festival, I want to make samosa from my motherland. It has been one of the top rated dish of India due to reasons of taste and availability.
This cuisine includes Maida flour, potatoes, some spices and few more vegetables. After covering all the ingredients in a triangle shape of cover made of the flour and deep fried into fresh a peanut oil. At last, served with the two chutneys of tamarind and coriander with green chilies which tastes delicious.
The reason I want to make this is the popularity in the world. A few months back, it was in the list of top fifteen best cuisine globally. Therefore, participants will look for it and we do not want disappoint them by not adding it. Additionally, it is not time consuming and not require many chefs to cook.
I have added some reviews for your reference and please let me know if you want to make any changes in the plan.
Kind regards,
Dhruvish Panchal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly offered to make a dish, described the samosa, and provided logical reasons for its inclusion in the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, though the description of the cooking process could be slightly more refined to improve clarity. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices like 'Additionally' and 'Therefore' to link your thoughts. However, some transitions between sentences within paragraphs feel slightly mechanical. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the flow between sentences is more natural and less reliant on simple conjunctions.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, such as 'participate', 'availability', and 'globally'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'motherland' (usually 'home country'), 'deep fried into fresh a peanut oil' (should be 'in'), and 'not require many chefs' (should be 'does not require'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word choice and preposition usage to reach a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'one of the top rated dish' (should be 'dishes'), 'after covering all the ingredients in a triangle shape of cover' (awkward phrasing), and 'it is not time consuming and not require' (should be 'does not require'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that your complex sentences are grammatically sound.
