Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I am a part of the international student's club. Your club is preparing an event of famous food from all over the world.

Hope you are doing well, my name is Yuvreet Rishi I am member of the international student's club. My humble request to the organization that kindly take butter chicken dish in the event. This is quite famous in India. Mostly in northern part.

After tempering of onion, tomato, ginger add some spices. When tempering becomes golden then turn off the gas. Afterwards, roast chicken and mix with the tempering and add butter in it. This smell's fantastic.

This dish is not only popular in India but also quite famous in western countries like Canada, United states etc. Mostly individual from every Nations likes the taste. Moreover, this dish is rich in protein, carbs and includes good fat. I think if this dish will be included in the event then people enjoy this dish.

Your faithfully,

Yuvreet Rishi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: offering to make a dish, describing it, and explaining why it should be included. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to an organizer, although the structure is slightly informal. You successfully identified the dish (butter chicken) and provided a brief explanation of its popularity and nutritional value. To improve, ensure that the description of the dish is more focused on its sensory appeal or cultural significance rather than a step-by-step recipe, as the latter is less relevant to the purpose of an event proposal. Overall, the task requirements are met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your ideas. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'Moreover' and 'Afterwards' to link sentences. However, the progression between the recipe section and the justification section feels a bit abrupt. The use of referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the sentence 'Mostly individual from every Nations likes the taste,' where the connection to the previous paragraph could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would help elevate your score in this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message, such as 'tempering,' 'nutritional,' and 'international.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'take butter chicken dish' instead of 'include butter chicken' and 'Mostly individual' instead of 'Most individuals.' Additionally, there are minor errors in pluralization and word forms, such as 'Nations' and 'smell's.' To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring that your word forms are consistent with the context of a formal or semi-formal letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('This smell's fantastic' should be 'It smells fantastic') and missing articles ('in northern part' should be 'in the northern part'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of apostrophes and capitalization. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for small errors like articles and plurals will significantly improve your accuracy.
