Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I am writing this letter to get permission about making a popular dish from my home country India in upcoming event.

I want to promote famous Indian dish biryani, it is a flavorful rice dish cooked with spices, vegetables, or meat. It is famous for its rich aroma and delicious taste, it is a mouthwatering dish, and all age individuals like to eat it from kids to elderly people because it's easy to eat and easily digestible and people often enjoy it during festivals and family gatherings.

Apart from that, if this dish included in the event, it is a different experience for everyone because in this event people come from all around the world and they didn't try it before so, this is also a best way to try something new and different as well as it consume less time in making people who have less time to make lunch and dinner maybe like it.

I am looking forward for your prompt response.

Yours faithfully,

Rupinder Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly offer to make a dish, describe it as a flavorful rice dish with spices and meat, and explain its suitability for the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an organizer. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why it should be included could be more persuasive by focusing on cultural representation rather than just the ease of preparation. Overall, the task requirements are met, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Apart from that' and 'because', which help the flow of ideas. However, the transition between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and there are instances where punctuation (such as comma splices) affects the flow. For example, the second paragraph contains several independent clauses joined only by commas, which disrupts the logical progression. Improving the use of linking words and varying sentence structure would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'flavorful', 'aroma', 'mouthwatering', and 'digestible'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'get permission about making' (should be 'to make') and 'it consume less time' (should be 'it consumes less time'). While you attempt to use descriptive language, the vocabulary is generally functional rather than sophisticated. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing like 'famous' and 'dish' used multiple times in close proximity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly regarding subject-verb agreement ('it consume') and sentence boundary issues. The use of comma splices—joining independent clauses with only a comma—is a recurring issue, such as in the sentence 'I want to promote famous Indian dish biryani, it is a flavorful rice dish...'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a lack of control over complex sentence construction. More attention to verb tenses and punctuation would significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
