You are a member of an International Students' club. The club is organising an event to celebrate popular food from around the world.
Write a letter to the event organiser, Luis. In your letter
- offer to make a popular dish from your country
- describe what this dish is
- explain why it should be included in the event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Luis,
I hope you are doing great. I am writing this letter because I would like to help you with our International Students' Club food event. I would like to make a popular dish from India, which is called Pav Bhaji. It is a very famous street food in India
Pav Bhaji is made with mashed vegetables such as potatoes, onions, tomatoes, cauliflower, cabbage, and green peas. These vegetables are then cooked with butter and special Indian spices to make a thick curry called Bhaji. It is served with soft Pav. Moreover, people also eat it with chopped onions and lemon.
I think Pav Bhaji should be included in the event because it is one of the most famous dishes in India, and around half of the Indian population eats this dish. In addition, this dish is very healthy for all students because all vegetables are included in this dish. This dish will give everyone a chance to taste Indian street food.
Please let me know if I can make this dish for the event.
Best regards,
Soni Dhruv

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

| Overall | 7.5 |
Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly offer to make a dish, describe Pav Bhaji in sufficient detail, and provide logical reasons for its inclusion in the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser, maintaining a helpful and enthusiastic stance throughout. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the description of the ingredients and the cultural significance of the dish. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific details about how you plan to manage the preparation or serving of the dish at the event, which would further demonstrate a full development of the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for the description and justification, and a polite closing. Each paragraph focuses on a single aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'because', which effectively link your sentences. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of transition words to avoid repetitive sentence structures. Overall, the progression of ideas is smooth and the paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary related to food and cooking, such as 'mashed vegetables', 'thick curry', and 'chopped'. This is sufficient for the task and allows you to convey your ideas clearly. There are no significant errors in word choice. To improve your score, try to incorporate more sophisticated or less common collocations. For example, instead of saying 'very famous', you could use 'renowned' or 'iconic'. Expanding your vocabulary to include more descriptive adjectives would add more flair to your writing and help you achieve a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
Your grammar is generally accurate, and the majority of your sentences are error-free. You use a mix of simple and compound sentences effectively. There are no major grammatical errors that impede communication. To improve, you could experiment with more complex sentence structures, such as using relative clauses or conditional sentences (e.g., 'If you were to include this dish, it would provide students with...'). Additionally, ensure consistent punctuation, as there is a missing period at the end of the first paragraph. Overall, your control of basic grammar is strong.
