Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. Luis,
Good day sir, I hope you're doing well, my aim in writing this letter is to tell you about a famous food from my home country that I would want to cook in event you are organising.
Since I I'm among the the international Students' club and I discovered in our campus majority of the our international student are from African countries with majority from Nigeria. There are several food with shared origin from African countries especially West African countries , the shared love for Jollof rice is what each West African have in come .This food is quite popular in my home land so i feel its would be great to include to the menu we would be having for this event
Jollof rice is a tomato based dish made with rice , beef stock ,vegetables like onion , carrots and other aromatic herbs. The signature origin color can be noticed by literally any one similar to the biryani dish among the Indians .While this dish is go delicious it can be paired with several types of protein like beef or chicken especially when its fried or barbecued .
It would be nice if this dish added to the food that will be displayed because its one of Africa's strongest dishes and owing majority of our international student are from Africa it would be a great addition to the menu and also serve as a way to learn about our culture through food.
I hope to be in touch with you sir so we can discuss more about the planning and preparation of this meal
Yours sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points of the task. You offered to make Jollof rice, provided a clear description of the dish, and explained its cultural significance and relevance to the student body. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are developed with slightly more precision; for instance, while you mention the dish is popular, you could briefly elaborate on why it would specifically enhance the event's atmosphere. Overall, the response is fully relevant and meets the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the introduction to the description of the dish and finally to the justification for its inclusion. Paragraphing is used, which helps the reader follow your points. However, there are some issues with cohesion; for example, the transition between sentences is sometimes repetitive, and the use of cohesive devices could be more varied. Phrases like 'this food' and 'this dish' are used frequently. Improving the flow by using a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in addition to this') would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using specific terms like 'aromatic herbs', 'signature', and 'barbecued'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'shared origin from African countries' instead of 'shared heritage' or 'originating from'. Additionally, there are some spelling and punctuation slips, such as 'in come' instead of 'in common' and 'its' instead of 'it is'. Despite these minor inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly throughout the letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the the international Students' club'), subject-verb agreement, and punctuation. For example, 'its would be great' should be 'it would be great'. There are also some run-on sentences that could be improved by using more precise punctuation. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
