Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Respected Mr. Luis,

I am very excited to celebrating the amazing event for all international students with you. Also, I want make suggestion regarding the event food as there are numerous dishes famous in India , for example, Butter chicken, Idly dosa, Curd rice.

Moreover, the dish Rajma Chawl is about kidney beans and rice, butter chicken has a Indian spices, basically from Punjab state as well as Idly dosa is south Indian food.

My suggestion to make this menu is because these dishes are Popular all over in India which international students always miss here. Also, this event would be rememberable not only for overseas leaners but also for local people who will try this amazing dishes for first time ever.

I would be joyful if you fulfill my request.

Thanks you

Gurpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points: offering a dish, describing it, and explaining its inclusion. However, the response is significantly under the 150-word minimum, which limits the development of ideas. The description of the dishes is somewhat list-like and lacks depth. To improve, you should expand on the sensory details of the food or the cultural significance to better engage the reader and meet the length requirement. Because the response is under-length, it cannot reach the higher bands for task achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organised into short paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. For example, 'Moreover' and 'Also' are used to start sentences, but the flow between ideas feels slightly disjointed. The progression of ideas is clear, but the lack of sufficient length prevents a more sophisticated development of the argument. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it is quite basic and repetitive. Phrases like 'amazing event' and 'amazing dishes' show a limited range. There are also some errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'make suggestion' instead of 'make a suggestion' and 'rememberable' instead of 'memorable'. To achieve a higher band, you should aim to use a wider variety of descriptive adjectives and more precise terminology related to food and cultural events.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'I am very excited to celebrating' (should be 'to celebrate') and 'I want make suggestion' (should be 'I want to make a suggestion'). The sentence structure is relatively simple, and there is a lack of complex sentence forms. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas and capitalisation. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors and the limited range of structures indicate a need for more practice with verb forms and sentence construction.
