Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I am writing to request you offer our country's famous dish in you event. Moreover, since you are celebrating popular food items from different nations, I would like represent one well-known dish from my country.

The name of the dish is "kheer". Moreover, it is a sweet dish which everyone like in my nation whether they live ne east or south. This is made of only few ingredients such as milk, shugar and rice. Furthermore, to enhance it's taste we can include cardmom in it.

Since it's taste is sweet, anyone could like it from kids to elders. Therefore, I am requesting you to include it in your event. Furthermore, It is made from less things and easy to make. We mainly prepare it on special occasions.

I would like to hear from you. I am hoping you will pay attention on this what I have discussed above.

Yours faithfully,

Harman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: offering to make a dish, describing it, and explaining its inclusion. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why the dish should be included relies on simple points like it being 'easy to make' and 'sweet'. To reach a higher band, you should expand on the cultural significance or the unique appeal of the dish to the international students, providing more depth to your arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organised into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Therefore' to link your ideas. However, the use of these connectors is sometimes repetitive and mechanical, particularly the frequent use of 'Moreover' and 'Furthermore' at the start of sentences. The progression of ideas is logical, but the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the transition between sentences feels more natural rather than formulaic.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to describe the dish and its ingredients clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'ingredients', 'enhance', and 'occasions'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'shugar' (sugar), 'cardmom' (cardamom), and 'ne' (near). Additionally, there are minor word choice issues, such as 'made from less things' instead of 'made with few ingredients'. To improve, focus on accurate spelling and using more precise collocations to describe the dish's characteristics.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'I am writing to request you offer' (should be 'request that you include'), 'everyone like' (subject-verb agreement error: 'everyone likes'), and 'it's taste' (confusing 'it's' with the possessive 'its'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they are frequent enough to impact the overall accuracy. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of possessive pronouns will help improve your score.
