Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Hello Mr.Luis,

I am PriyaBhavana, a first year student and a member of the International students club at Hawkins. I heard the club is organizing an international food festival. It is really such a great idea to celebrate the world cuisine. In this letter I would like to express my interest in participating in this event and make country’s famous delicacy chicken biryani.

Biryani is not only famous in my country but also across the world. Here in this letter I would like to quickly go through the process to make you understand why it is important to include in the event. Firstly, we have to marinate the chicken with different spices and keep it a side. Next you have to place a pan on the stove and boil rice by adding water, mint, lemon, salt. Now start spreading both the mixtures layer after the layer. On top add some ghee and place it on medium heat for 45 minutes.Once the biryani is ready serve it hot.

It is not only tasty but also healthy as it consists of different types of spices which serves as antibiotics. I am sure adding this is to the list of cuisines will make the event more successful as most of the people love the taste of the biryani.

Hope you will consider the idea of adding chicken biryani for the event.

Awaiting your reply.

Yours Sincerely,

Priya.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You offered to make chicken biryani, provided a description of the dish, and explained why it should be included. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. However, the description of the dish focuses heavily on the cooking process rather than the sensory or cultural description of the dish itself. To improve, ensure that the description provides a more vivid picture of the dish's characteristics, such as its aroma, texture, or cultural significance, rather than just a recipe-style list of instructions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Next', and 'Once', which help guide the reader through the steps. However, the transition between the description of the dish and the explanation of why it should be included could be smoother. Some sentences are slightly repetitive in structure, and the paragraphing could be more balanced to ensure a better flow of ideas. Overall, the message is easy to follow and the progression of ideas is logical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'delicacy', 'marinate', and 'antibiotics'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'keep it a side' (should be 'set it aside') and 'layer after the layer' (should be 'layer upon layer'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Expanding your use of descriptive adjectives and more precise culinary terminology would enhance your lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'make country’s famous delicacy' (missing article 'my'), 'it is important to include in the event' (missing object 'it'), and 'adding this is to the list' (unnecessary 'is'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some spacing issues after periods. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will help improve your accuracy.
