Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Luis,

I am writing to inform you to make one of the popular dish of my country on food event.

I am Tinkal Desai, member of an International Students’ club came to know that the club is scheduling a programme to celebrate popular food of the world on next month’s first Sunday. As I am from India, I am requesting you to make one of the famous dish of my country. Although there are so many but I would like to inform you that Idli is very popular and delicious among all generations. It is mainly South Indian dish which is being eaten with sambhar and coconut chutney. Some people also prefer to have red chilli chutney also.

Idli sambhar is very light to eat and doesn’t generally affect health. Among everything coconut chutney has its different quality to make idli more tasty. I think this dish would manage everyone’s taste because it can manage its spicy taste with the use of red chilli chutney. And everyone can enjoy the dish.

Waiting for your positive response.

Yours sincerely,

Tinkal Desai

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You offered to make a dish, described it as a South Indian meal consisting of idli, sambhar, and chutney, and explained its suitability for the event due to its light nature and customizable spice levels. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organizer. To improve, ensure that your opening sentence clearly states your purpose; currently, 'I am writing to inform you to make one of the popular dish' is slightly confusing, as it sounds like you are telling Luis to make the dish rather than offering to prepare it yourself.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'As I am from', and 'because'. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. For example, the transition between describing the dish and explaining why it should be included could be smoother. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as 'Among everything', which does not effectively link to the previous sentence. Using a wider variety of linking words would help improve the overall flow and coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your ideas clearly. You use specific terms like 'sambhar', 'coconut chutney', and 'generations'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For instance, 'inform you to make' is unnatural in this context, and 'manage everyone’s taste' is not the standard way to express that a dish appeals to a wide variety of people. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise collocations would help you reach a higher band score. The spelling is generally accurate throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors. For example, 'one of the popular dish' should be 'one of the popular dishes' (plural noun after 'one of'). Additionally, 'came to know' is a bit informal, and 'is being eaten' is a passive construction that feels slightly awkward here. There are also minor issues with article usage and prepositions. Despite these errors, they do not impede communication, and you show a reasonable attempt at using complex structures to convey your message.
