Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Luis,
My name is Gulshan. I am a member of an International Students club. I got to know that the club is going to conduct an event to celebrate popular food from all over the world.
Firstly, I offer to make a popular dish from my country in the event. The dish is called as Hyderabadi Dum Biryani, which is made up of Rice, meat and some of Indian spices. It tastes really good and it is very popular among the world. This dish can attract people a lot to the event. So, I strongly suggest to prepare the dish for this event. Moreover majority of our club members want to taste the dish which I suggested. Personally, I recommend this popular dish should be kept in this event. The making of this dish is very easy.
To conclude, this dish will get highlighted in the event.
Regards,
Gulshan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points: offering a dish, describing it, and explaining its inclusion. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. The description of the dish is brief, and the explanation for its inclusion relies on repetitive phrasing such as 'popular' and 'good'. To reach a higher band, you should provide more vivid details about the flavors or cultural significance of the dish and offer a more compelling argument for why it would be a highlight of the event, rather than simply stating it is 'easy' to make.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is organized into a logical sequence, moving from the introduction to the offer, description, and justification. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. For example, the transition 'To conclude' is used, but the paragraphing is underdeveloped, with the body of the letter appearing as one large block. Using more varied linking words (e.g., 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', 'In addition to this') and better paragraph breaks would improve the flow and logical progression of your ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You rely heavily on basic adjectives like 'good' and 'popular'. There are also some minor collocation errors, such as 'called as' (should be 'called') and 'among the world' (should be 'around the world'). To improve, try to incorporate more descriptive, topic-specific vocabulary related to food and events to demonstrate a wider range and better control over word choice.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I got to know that' (informal/clunky), 'made up of Rice, meat and some of Indian spices' (article usage errors), and 'suggest to prepare' (should be 'suggest preparing'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage will help improve your accuracy.
