Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Luis,

I hope you are doing well.

I am writing to suggest you a popular food from India for an event which is organized by an international Students’ club.

First and foremost, there are several cuisines, which are famous in my home country. However, I would like to suggest you to make khichdi for an event to represent India.

Moreover, this dish is made from various lentils, vegetables, rice, and spices; therefore, it would be healthy for people of all ages. Not only this, but we can pair this dish with buttermilk, as it will give comfort in this hot weather.

Lastly, it contains a lot of vitamins, minerals, and protein which are very beneficial for our body. Also, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian people can enjoy it with crackers and salad. It is also important for individuals to know about this delicious and wholesome food, as it has numerous benefits.

I hope my suggestion will be helpful to you.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

See you at the event.

Kind regards,

Dhruvi Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You offered to make a dish, described it as a mixture of lentils, vegetables, rice, and spices, and provided clear reasons for its inclusion, such as its health benefits and versatility. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. To improve, ensure that your introduction clearly states the purpose of the letter without unnecessary wordiness, such as 'suggest you a popular food'. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'Moreover', and 'Lastly' to guide the reader through your points. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The referencing is clear, and the progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion is logical. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the connection between sentences feels more natural rather than relying on standard list-like transitions.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'cuisines', 'beneficial', and 'wholesome'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'suggest you to make', which should be 'suggest making' or 'suggest that you make'. Additionally, 'represent India' is a good collocation. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the more sophisticated or precise lexical items that would characterize a higher band score. Focusing on more natural collocations will help improve this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'if' or 'as' clauses. There are some minor grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'an event which is organized by an international Students’ club' (the 'an' is unnecessary here) and 'suggest you a popular food' (incorrect verb pattern). However, these errors do not impede communication. Your punctuation is generally accurate, and the sentence structures are clear. To improve, focus on verb patterns and article usage to ensure greater precision in your writing.
