Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Luis,

I heard we are organizing a special event for International students and the menu is popular food around the world. I believe one of the food items should be Red Beans with rice, popularly known as Rajma Chawal.

Red beans are boiled overnight, stir with tomatoes and onions until cooked properly and lastly, adding some Indian spices for the taste. It is commonly served with rice on the side.

I think it should be included in our event because students who are far from their families and miss their cuisine will love it. Red beans is very popular in Indian community. Majority of people from different sides of India will love this dish. In addition, offering this dish will make them feel valued and welcomed. Moreover, it's a vegetarian dish so other community can also try and exploring taste around the world.

I would appreciate your approval and guidance.

Sincerely,

Harshneet Raina

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly offered to make a dish, provided a description of the preparation process, and explained the cultural significance and benefits of including it in the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an organizer, and the purpose is clear throughout. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the description of the dish to make it more vivid or provide more specific details about why this particular dish represents your country's culinary heritage, which would further develop your ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition' and 'Moreover' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences in the second paragraph is slightly mechanical. For example, the transition between describing the cooking process and the serving suggestion could be smoother. To improve, ensure that your linking words are used to create a more natural progression of ideas rather than just acting as signposts at the start of sentences.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'culinary heritage' or 'staple dish' would be more precise than 'food items'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'exploring taste' instead of 'exploring new tastes' or 'different sides of India' instead of 'different regions of India'. While these errors do not impede communication, using more specific collocations would demonstrate a stronger command of the language and help you achieve a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'stir with tomatoes' (should be 'stirred with') and 'Red beans is' (should be 'Red beans are'). Additionally, 'other community' should be pluralized to 'other communities'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensure that your verb tenses are consistent when describing a process.
