Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Luis,
I hope you are doing well, Iam writing to volunteer to prepare a traditional dish for the upcoming International Food Celebration. Requesting you to cook a traditional dish from my home country.
I would love to make Biryani, an iconic and aromatic rice dish from my home country. It features fragrant basmati rice layered with tender marinated paneer, caramelized onions, and a rich blend of species like saffron and cardamom, slow cooked together in a sealed pot.
Biryani is a must have for the event because it is the ultimate centerpiece at festivals and family gatherings back home. Its comforting combination of savory flavour and spiced rice is loved worldwide. It can easily be made and its vegetarian so everyone can enjoy it.
Please let me know if you need any assistance with preparations or ingredients. I look forward to helping make the event a great success!
Best regards,
John

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly offered to prepare a dish, provided a vivid description of the Biryani, and gave a logical explanation for why it should be included in the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser, maintaining a helpful and enthusiastic persona throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of an international food celebration. To reach a higher band, ensure that your opening sentence clearly states the purpose of the letter without repeating the request in a confusing way, as seen in your second sentence.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'because' and 'for example', to link your thoughts. However, the transition between the first and second sentences in the opening paragraph is slightly abrupt. To improve, ensure that your sentences flow more naturally into one another using a wider variety of linking words or phrases to connect your ideas more fluidly.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using descriptive terms such as 'iconic', 'aromatic', 'centerpiece', and 'marinated'. This adds depth to your writing and makes the description of the dish engaging. There is a minor spelling error ('species' instead of 'spices') and a minor grammatical slip ('its' instead of 'it's'). Despite these small issues, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning with precision and style. Continuing to use descriptive adjectives and topic-specific terminology will help you move into the higher band range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For instance, the sentence 'It features fragrant basmati rice layered with...' shows good control of participial phrases. There are a few minor errors, such as the comma splice in the first sentence ('...doing well, Iam writing...') and the missing apostrophe in 'it's'. Additionally, 'Iam' should be written as two words. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on proofreading for punctuation and basic subject-verb agreement to ensure your writing is polished and error-free.
