Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Luis,
I hope you are doing well. I wanted to offer you some help in deciding on the event's popular food. I would be delighted to prepare Dal Bhati, which is a famous dish of Rajasthan, India.
Dal Bhati is prepared with white flour, and then it is turned into a ball-like structure and is served with Dal and Churma. Churma is a sweet dish made by mixing ghee and sugar. It is very delicious and the favorite dish of most people in India. They enjoy it a lot.
I think it will be a great addition to the event. Most people will like it and enjoy the taste. It should be included because people can get an amazing experience after tasting it. It is totally homemade and healthy, so even a health-conscious person can try it. Most foreign individuals always try this whenever they visit Rajasthan for its famous forts and temples.
I would appreciate it if you could add this to the event. Please let me know whether I need to bring the ingredients or if the club can arrange them for me.
Yours Sincerely
Saloni

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly offered to prepare a dish, provided a descriptive explanation of Dal Bhati, and justified its inclusion in the event by highlighting its cultural significance and health benefits. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser, maintaining a helpful and polite register throughout. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, providing enough detail to satisfy the requirements of the task. No parts of the prompt were omitted, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the opening paragraph.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized, with a clear progression of ideas from the offer to the description and finally the justification. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'I think', 'because', and 'I would appreciate it if' to link your sentences. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases (e.g., 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', 'In addition to this') to make the flow between sentences feel more sophisticated and less mechanical.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. You use specific terms like 'ingredients', 'health-conscious', and 'significance' (implied). However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive, particularly the use of 'dish' and 'enjoy'. To improve, try to use more precise synonyms or descriptive adjectives to enhance the imagery of the food. For example, instead of saying 'it is very delicious', you could use 'it offers a unique, savory flavor profile'. Your spelling is accurate throughout, and your word choices are generally appropriate for the context of a student club event.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free, which ensures that your message is communicated without difficulty. There are minor areas for improvement, such as the phrasing 'it is turned into a ball-like structure', which could be more naturally expressed as 'it is shaped into small balls'. Additionally, ensure consistent subject-verb agreement and article usage. While you have good control over basic grammar, incorporating more varied complex structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice constructions, would demonstrate a wider grammatical range.
