Dear Luis,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Luis,
I am writing this to offer to make a popular dish from my nation for the food event.
I want to make a traditional dish from my culture called 'Malai khofta'. This is a curry with fried mixture of multiple crushed vegitables mashed into one another. This can be made in both spicy and sweet style because in different parts, it is like a little sweeter but in most it is made spice. So I would recommend the spicy version to be introduced to people in the event.
It holds a very important value in my culture and my family, as my family recipe has been passed by for 6 generations. My mother tought me this recipe since my childhood and I am very confident that I can make it really good for everyone present there.
I want to thank you for your time and hopefully you will understand why this should be added to the food list.
Yours faithfully,
Gurjagjot Singh Waraich

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You offered to make a dish, described it as a vegetable curry, and provided a clear reason for its inclusion based on its cultural and familial significance. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. To improve, you could provide more specific details about the ingredients or the sensory experience of the dish to further develop your ideas. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'This is', 'as', and 'so' to link your sentences. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases (e.g., 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', 'In addition to this') to improve the flow between sentences and paragraphs, making the progression of ideas feel more sophisticated and less mechanical.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'traditional dish', 'passed by for 6 generations', and 'cultural value' are used effectively. However, there are some minor spelling errors, such as 'vegitables' (vegetables) and 'tought' (taught), and some slightly awkward phrasing like 'mashed into one another'. To improve, focus on using more precise culinary terminology and ensure accurate spelling. Expanding your vocabulary to include more descriptive adjectives would also enhance the quality of your writing and help you achieve a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'passed by for 6 generations' (should be 'passed down') and 'I am very confident that I can make it really good' (could be more formal, e.g., 'I am confident that I can prepare it to a high standard'). Punctuation is generally correct, but ensure you check for subject-verb agreement and preposition usage. Increasing your use of varied complex sentence structures while maintaining accuracy will help you progress to a higher band.
