Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Luis,

I hope you're well. I am writing this letter to introduce the Idli Dosa in our event. The dish I want to append is Idli Sambhar, it is a curry with full of organic ingredients, and served with Idli. Although this dish is popular in all over the India, it is mostly well-liked in South India.

Idli is not only easy to prepare but also gives a delicious taste. We need a cup of rice with lentils, and two cups of water, after mixing this, leave it for one night in a container. Whereas for sambhar, We need mix vegetables cooked with lentils as same like a curry.

This dish is perfect for this event. Majority of people often choose to eat less spicy. This meal would be prefered by foreigners, which easy to cook with limited material. Please let me know if you are interested in this. So, I will book a stall in advance.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Your sincerely,

Gurdeep Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You offered to make a dish, described it, and provided a clear rationale for its inclusion in the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. However, the development of your ideas is slightly limited; for instance, the description of the dish and the explanation of why it is suitable could be expanded with more descriptive language to better engage the reader. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'Whereas', and 'not only... but also', which help connect your sentences. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother in the second paragraph. Overall, the structure is clear and supports the message well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'ingredients', 'lentils', and 'container'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'append' (which is not the right fit for 'add a dish') and 'as same like a curry' (which is grammatically awkward). While you attempt to use more descriptive language, some phrasing is slightly unnatural. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise adjectives and collocations would help you reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'in all over the India' (should be 'all over India'), 'which easy to cook' (missing a verb), and 'Your sincerely' (should be 'Yours sincerely'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage will significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
