Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Luis,
I heard that club is organising an event to celebrate famous food from across the nation and it is wonderful idea. I would offer to make a popular dish from my country in the event and the dish known as Chicken biryani. It gives rich aroma of flavor.
Furthermore, dish is made up of rice, spices, and cooked chicken, also it has different kind of methods to make this dish. This dish is from India and there are various spices uses in the dish and the taste of food is mouth-watering. I highly recommend this dish to be a part of event.
In addition, dish is very simple, but it is authentic and all the student will like it because of the rich taste and flavor. Apart form this, Chicken biryani dish can be over power among all other dish from different countries. Also, it will be the most favorable dish from the students in the event.
Thank you
Jeel Patel.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: offering to make a dish, describing it, and explaining its inclusion. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a club organizer. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention the dish is 'simple' and 'authentic,' you could have provided more specific details about why these qualities make it a great addition to an international food event. The ideas are relevant, but the explanation remains a bit repetitive. To reach a higher band, ensure each point is fully extended with more descriptive language and clearer reasoning.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'In addition' to link your ideas. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical, and there are instances where the flow is interrupted by missing articles (e.g., 'dish is made up of...'). The referencing is occasionally unclear, such as when you refer to 'the dish' repeatedly without enough variation. Improving the use of pronouns and transition words will help create a smoother, more natural progression of ideas throughout the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your ideas, using terms like 'authentic,' 'aroma,' and 'mouth-watering.' However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'over power among all other dish' and 'favorable dish from the students.' These errors occasionally make the meaning slightly less clear. To improve, focus on learning how words collocate naturally in English and ensure you use the correct plural forms, such as 'dishes' instead of 'dish' when speaking generally. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise adjectives would also be beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is a good start. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with article usage (e.g., 'I heard that club is organising,' 'part of event') and subject-verb agreement. Some sentences are slightly fragmented or lack necessary prepositions. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to affect the overall fluency of your writing. To improve, pay closer attention to basic grammar rules, especially the use of 'a,' 'an,' and 'the,' and ensure your sentences are complete and grammatically sound.
