Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Luis,

I hope you are doing well!, I have heard that we are organizing an event to celebrate well-known food from around the world. Therefore, I am writing to provide an information about the dish which is popular in India and worth having at our event.

Being a long-lasting member of an International Students' club I would like an organizer to offer an Indian dish called Dosa and Idli at our prestigious event. This is because, it is a authentic dish, which is easy to digest, from south India and being served during the special occasion. In addition to that, it is believed that Idli provides good bacteria in our digestive system.

I will be delighted if an event organizer introduce that dish during lunch time as the majority of our members are from south India. Apart from that processing time of preparing that dish is less than other dishes. If you require further information about that dish feel free to reach me out.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Jack.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You offered to make a dish, described it, and provided reasons for its inclusion. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. However, the development of your ideas is slightly limited; for instance, the description of the dish could be more vivid to entice the reader, and the explanation for why it should be included relies heavily on health benefits rather than the cultural significance requested by the prompt. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting details are more fully extended and directly linked to the context of an international food celebration.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'In addition to that', and 'Apart from that' to connect your ideas. However, some of these transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. The paragraphing is generally appropriate, though the second paragraph is quite dense and could have been split to better separate the description of the dish from the justification for its inclusion. Improving the variety of your linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'prestigious', 'authentic', and 'delighted'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'provide an information' (should be 'provide information') and 'reach me out' (should be 'reach out to me'). Additionally, 'processing time' is slightly unnatural in this context; 'preparation time' would be more precise. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, you should focus on using more natural collocations and avoiding unnecessary articles to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'I would like an organizer to offer' (which sounds like you are asking the organiser to do the work, rather than offering your own help), 'being served during the special occasion' (which lacks a clear subject), and 'if an event organizer introduce' (subject-verb agreement error). Punctuation is generally clear, but there is an unnecessary comma after 'well!'. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and refining your use of articles will significantly improve your accuracy.
