Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Luis,

I am writing to offer to prepare a famous pakistani dish called Chicken Biryani for International students club food festival.

Chicken biryani is a traditional rice dish made with basmati rice, chicken, aromatic spices, onions, and herbs. The dish is usually served with fresh salad and yougurt. This dish is well known for its rich flavour, colourful appearance, and delicious aroma, making it a favourite for family gatherings and events.

I believe this dish would be a great addition for the food fest, as it represents a true image of pakistani culture. It is also a meal that many people from different cultures enjoy, even if they have tried before. Since it is full of flavour, I am sure it will be popular among the visitors.

Please let me know if you would like me to prepare it. I would be happy to make the event a success.

Yours sincerely,

Tims

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly offer to prepare Chicken Biryani, provide a descriptive overview of the dish, and explain its suitability for the event. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser, maintaining a polite and helpful stance throughout. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, providing enough detail to satisfy the requirements of the task. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning, and the closing is professional and consistent with the requested format.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The letter is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a specific purpose: the introduction states the purpose, the body paragraphs describe the dish and justify its inclusion, and the final paragraph provides a polite closing. Cohesive devices such as 'as', 'since', and 'also' are used effectively to link ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of information is smooth, making the letter easy to follow. There is a clear sense of structure that guides the reader through the content without any confusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for the task. Phrases like 'aromatic spices', 'rich flavour', and 'colourful appearance' are well-chosen and descriptive. While the vocabulary is generally accurate, there are minor issues with capitalization, such as 'pakistani' and 'yougurt' (spelling error). However, these do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate slightly more sophisticated collocations or varied synonyms to describe the cultural significance of the dish. Overall, the lexical range is sufficient to convey your message clearly and effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The letter shows a good control of grammatical structures. You use a mix of simple and complex sentences effectively, such as 'I believe this dish would be a great addition... as it represents a true image of pakistani culture.' There are very few grammatical errors, though there are some minor slips with articles (e.g., 'for International students club' should be 'for the International students' club'). Punctuation is generally accurate, and the sentence construction is clear. The majority of your sentences are error-free, which demonstrates a solid command of English grammar.
