Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Luis,

I hope you are doing well. I'm writing to express my interest to participate in the event our International Student's club is hosting. I would be glad to introduce a popular cuisine from my country in this event.

The dish is called Biryani, it originated from the southern part of India and spread rapidly all across the country for it's spices and flavors. Biryani is made up of slowly cooked layers and the main ingredients are long grain (Basmati) rice, choice of meat and spices. The base is made of meat marinated with yogurt and spices, then comes the rice. This is repeated two times which makes it a total of four layers and top it off with some coriander and crispy onions.

I strongly believe that this Indian cuisine will be a great addition for this event. I'm sure that everyone will enjoy and experience this dish.

I hope you will grant me the opportunity to add my dish in the event. Please do let me know the event details and number of attendees expected before hand. So that, I can start the preparation in a timely manner.

Thanks,

Pranith

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly offered to make a dish, provided a descriptive explanation of Biryani, and justified its inclusion in the event by highlighting its popularity and appeal. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser, maintaining a polite and professional register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail on why the dish would be a cultural highlight for the club, perhaps mentioning how it encourages sharing traditions, which would further strengthen the persuasive element of your letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which aids readability. You use some cohesive devices effectively, such as 'The dish is called', 'I strongly believe', and 'I hope you will'. However, the transition between sentences could be smoother in some places; for example, the sentence 'So that, I can start the preparation' is a sentence fragment and should be connected to the previous sentence. Improving the variety of linking words would help the flow of your writing appear more natural and sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for the task, such as 'marinated', 'cuisine', and 'timely manner'. There are some minor errors in word choice and punctuation, such as the misuse of the possessive 'it's' instead of 'its' and the slightly awkward phrasing 'introduce a popular cuisine from my country in this event' (it would be more natural to say 'introduce a popular dish from my country to the event'). Despite these small slips, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly and effectively, and you successfully use some topic-specific terminology related to food preparation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Your control of grammar is generally good, though there are a few minor errors. For instance, 'interest to participate' should be 'interest in participating', and 'add my dish in the event' would be better as 'add my dish to the event'. Additionally, there is a minor punctuation error in 'before hand', which should be one word ('beforehand'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication, and the majority of your sentences are clear and grammatically sound.
