Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I hope this letter finds you in radiant health and the best of spirits. I am writing this letter to you to offer renowned Indian dish.

Moreover, that dish is Chicken Biryani. This is famous food in my country. Because people often prefer to cook this dish on special occasions. Such as, wedding, Diwali and Eid to make these event more special. Thus, I would like to recommend you to add this dish in our International Students' club.

In addition, this cousin is based on the chicken, tomato, potato, onion and other dry spices. Besides that, if some students avoid eating chicken, then we can remove chicken from the menu. Thus, every one can enjoy this dish.

Finally, according to my prospective it would be best option for our an International Students' club even. Because, most international pupils are keen to eat chicken, and this dish prepare in the Bar Bay que. Consequently, they would like to have this dish.

Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to your prompt action.

Yours faithfully,

Tabassum.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: offering to make a dish, describing it, and explaining why it should be included. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why the dish should be included relies on repetitive points about chicken. To reach a higher band, you should provide more descriptive detail about the dish's cultural significance or its appeal to a diverse group of students, rather than focusing primarily on the ingredients.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'Consequently' to link your ideas. However, some of these transitions feel slightly mechanical or are used incorrectly, such as 'Thus' at the start of a sentence when it does not logically follow the previous thought. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly in the final paragraph where the connection between the dish and the 'Bar Bay que' (barbecue) is confusing and disrupts the flow of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message, including terms like 'renowned', 'prospective' (though used incorrectly for 'perspective'), and 'consideration'. There are several instances of word-choice errors, such as 'cousin' instead of 'cuisine' and 'Bar Bay que' for 'barbecue'. These errors occasionally impede the reader's understanding. To improve, focus on learning the correct spelling and context for common culinary and descriptive terms. Expanding your range of adjectives beyond 'special' and 'popular' would also help improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is a good start. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with articles ('the best of spirits', 'an International Students' club even'), subject-verb agreement ('this dish prepare'), and sentence fragments ('Such as, wedding, Diwali and Eid'). These errors are noticeable and sometimes require the reader to re-read to understand the intended meaning. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for missing articles or incorrect verb forms will significantly improve your accuracy.
