Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I hope you are doing well. I have heard that the club is organizing a competition to celebrate popular food from all around the world. Since I'm one of the members of this club, I would like to participate for the same.

I'm writing this letter to request you to allow me to bring a cuisine from my home country, which is India. I'm really a good cook and I make Indian cuisine all the time. I would like to bring Rajma Chawal, which is made of red kidney beans and rice. It is made using of a lot of spices and love. Alongside with it, I would also like to present Gajar ka Halwa, which is a sweet dish made of carrots and milk.

I believe these dishes should be included in the race of celebration as it represents India and also every other citizen in India eats this food on a regular basis. I hope you give me permission to enter the event.

Regards,

Sanjana

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: offering to make a dish, describing it, and explaining why it should be included. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organizer. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the explanation of why the dishes should be included is a bit repetitive and could be more persuasive. To reach a higher band, try to elaborate more on the cultural significance or the unique appeal of the food to the club members, rather than just stating that people eat it regularly.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Since', 'Alongside with it', and 'I believe'. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as 'race of celebration', which is not a standard collocation. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'participate', 'cuisine', and 'represent'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'made using of' (should be 'made using') and 'race of celebration' (which is unclear). While you successfully convey your meaning, the vocabulary is somewhat limited and lacks the precision or variety required for higher bands. Expanding your use of descriptive adjectives and more sophisticated culinary terminology would improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'I'm really a good cook' (more naturally 'I am a skilled cook') and 'Alongside with it' (the 'with' is redundant). Additionally, 'I would like to participate for the same' is slightly awkward phrasing. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the errors do not impede communication. To improve, focus on refining your use of prepositions and ensuring subject-verb agreement remains consistent.
