Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Luis.

I am writing this email to offer a well-known dish from my country for the event you are organising in the club.

I come from a country where there are numerous types of dishes that people prepare and enjoy. But, for event, I would like to offer a popular dish that is Butter chicken.

Further, I would like to elaborate on the above dish, it may sound familier to you, but the way of preparing and as well as the taste in my country, is differnt from what you had here in canada.

I still remember, how my boss enjoyed Butter chicken when he visited India. He mentioned that many of his friends suggested to try the dish and very amazed by the taste. And hence, I believe that people attending the event you be delighted and would really enjoy the dish.

Hope that you accept my offer. waiting for your response.

Thanks & Regards,

Reshma

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: offering a dish, describing it, and explaining why it should be included. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention that the dish is 'Butter chicken' and explain that it differs from local versions, the description could be more vivid to truly entice the reader. Additionally, the explanation for its inclusion relies heavily on a personal anecdote about your boss rather than focusing on the dish's cultural significance or universal appeal, which would have strengthened your argument. Overall, the task is fulfilled, but the content lacks depth.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear opening and closing. You use basic paragraphing to separate your ideas, which helps the reader follow your train of thought. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. For example, the transition 'Further, I would like to elaborate on the above dish' is a bit clunky. Additionally, some sentences are loosely connected, such as the transition between the description of the dish and the anecdote about your boss. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'organising', 'elaborate', and 'delighted'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'familier' (familiar), 'differnt' (different), and 'canada' (Canada). These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more precise vocabulary and ensure accurate spelling. You rely on fairly simple word choices; incorporating more descriptive adjectives or topic-specific vocabulary related to food would improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Issues include missing articles ('for event' instead of 'for the event'), incorrect verb forms ('you be delighted' instead of 'you would be delighted'), and punctuation errors, such as the period after 'Dear Luis' instead of a comma. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to affect the overall fluency of the letter. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and prepositions, as these are recurring issues in your writing.
