Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Luis,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing because I would like to make a popular dish from my country for the international students' club food event.
I would like to make a vegetable biryani, which is a famous indian dish. It is made with rice and fresh vegetables, spices and herbs. It is usually served with yogurt or salad. Many people in india enjoy this dish at festivals and in functions.
I think vegetable biryani should be added in the event because it is very popular dishes in my country. It is also suitable for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians. People who wants to try something different they can try vegetable biryani. This dish is colourful and healthy. I believe many students from different countries will enjoy this dish and learning more about indian food and culture.
Please let me know if I can help in many other way.
Yours Sincerely,
Keyur Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all three bullet points effectively. You clearly offer to make a dish, describe it as a vegetable biryani with specific ingredients, and provide logical reasons for its inclusion, such as its suitability for diverse dietary needs. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. To reach a higher band, ensure that you consistently use plural forms correctly, as seen in the phrase 'it is very popular dishes', which should be 'it is a very popular dish'. Overall, the purpose of the letter is fully achieved.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use basic cohesive devices like 'also' and 'because' to link your thoughts. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of linking words or transition phrases (e.g., 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', or 'In addition to this') to create a smoother flow between sentences and paragraphs. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'festivals', 'functions', and 'vegetarians'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and number agreement, such as 'popular dishes' instead of 'a popular dish' and 'in many other way' instead of 'in any other way'. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Using more precise collocations or descriptive adjectives would enhance the quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I believe many students... will enjoy this dish and learning more about...'. There are some grammatical slips, such as subject-verb agreement errors ('People who wants to try' should be 'People who want to try') and minor prepositional issues. Despite these, the meaning is always clear. To improve, focus on ensuring that your subjects and verbs agree and that you maintain consistency in your verb tenses throughout the letter.
