Dear Luis,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Luis,

I am writing this letter to express my sincere interest in the upcoming event. I would like to participate in this event by making a famous dish of my country.

I am planning to prepare corn-flour chapatis and Rappini. It is one of the famous food in our country. People usually prefer to eat this dish during Winter season. Firstly, we need to cut the rappini and then cook in the pressure cooker, and then some Salt and other Spices to make this delicious. Afterwards, it serves with corn-flour chapatis.

In this event, participants will make popular food of their country, so this can add a value to our culture and our countries ethics. Furthermore, the foreign audience will taste something new that they never had in their life. Although, it is just a dish but it can represent our countries culture. Therefore, our guests can explore new food.

I look forward to a favourable response.

Yours sincerely,

Lima

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You offered to make a dish, described it, and provided a clear rationale for its inclusion. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an event organiser. However, the description of the dish is slightly underdeveloped; while you mention the ingredients, the process is a bit mechanical. To reach a higher band, you could provide more vivid sensory details about the dish to make it more appealing to the reader. Overall, the response is relevant and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', and 'Therefore' to link your ideas. However, the transition between the description of the dish and the explanation of why it should be included is slightly abrupt. Additionally, some referencing is a bit repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'this dish' and 'this event'. Improving the variety of your linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'pressure cooker' and 'corn-flour chapatis'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'add a value to our culture' (should be 'add value to our culture') and 'countries ethics' (should be 'country's traditions' or 'cultural heritage'). The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher band scores. Expanding your repertoire of descriptive adjectives and collocations would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'It is one of the famous food' (should be 'one of the most famous foods') and 'it serves with' (should be 'it is served with'). Additionally, there are some punctuation and capitalization issues, such as the unnecessary capitalization of 'Winter', 'Salt', and 'Spices'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and passive voice construction will help improve your accuracy.
